I wish I could say the Audi R8 was mine... but needless to say it got a lot more attention than the store windows.Hong Kong might be a shopper's paradise but its love for all things Western (and Japanese) can be a little frustrating. Aside from the numerous luxury flagships, you will of course find many homegrown lower-end brands, but trying to track down something by a local designer is another story. While foreign labels are popular, because they are seen as prestigious and 'better', those designers who grew up in the city or just completed a fashion degree there will have a much tougher time hitting it big in Asia. Vivienne Tam, one of HK's biggest designers, only found success in her home town after moving to NYC and presenting her collections there. Thankfully the trend for all things 'local' has started to emerge, with various showcases and exhibitions launched in previous years to support creative talent from the area.
Lu Lu Cheung was a designer, lucky enough to have gained recognition and a thriving career in the industry early on. A former graduate of the Hong Kong Fashion Design college, she started out as a buyer and designer in her uncle's clothing store between 1974-1982, before founding her own company: the Rolls Group Ltd. Her brand 'Terra Rosalis' followed six years later, but it was her own signature label 'Lu Lu Cheung', launched in 1996, that received the most critical acclaim. She has since won several awards, showed at Tokyo, Sydney, Singapore and Hong Kong Fashion Weeks and started exporting her collections to various renowned stockists around the world. She is also lucky enough to have two very prominent flagships in HK's Central district: one in the glitzy Landmark shopping center and another newly opened store in the hip Soho area - one of the few standalone boutiques to have its own storefront overlooking a busy street.
Unlike Vivienne Tam, who generally chooses to go with an East meets West theme, Cheung's designs are much more low key and neutral, i.e. they're something the French would probably go crazy for. To quote her directly: "I want my designs to conjure a buoyant feminine beauty but I also want to have down-to-earth practicality". She goes on to state that the contrast of a soft yet strong woman is key. Her inspiration is usually derived from nature's colors, textures and forms with a preference for natural fibres such as silk, cotton, wool or cashmere. The store design follows this simple yet modern aesthetic, with white-washed brick walls, pale rustic furniture and other charming elements such as Roman-inspired pedestals used to display flowers. The cutest item was probably in the store window: a little red bird house stood next to the mannequins, with a few miniature pine trees nearby to help with the festive mood.
Once in-store I was immediately drawn to the draped pieces and the 'holey' scarf you can see in the first lookbook collage. Items ranged from sport chic basics, such as simple cardigans or silk blouses to more elegant outfits which included sparkly dresses, feathered berets or pleated skirts. The detailing was impeccable as seen on the rose applique tops and the beautifully tailored coats. The great thing is that you could pretty much integrate any element of clothing into your existing wardrobe without effort. The colors were generally muted, with soft pinks, grays and beige dominating the sales area (making them perfect for SS10) along with the usual black and navy.
More clothing on the other side of the room (left) while a mannequin shows off a metallic skirt (right). The large table in the center displayed a selection of embellished tunics, embroidered blouses and knit sweaters, while photos from the current lookbook were strewn around to give a little fashion inspiration. I was greeted by two very eager SAs who later approached me several times offering their help or trying to show me a new arrival. This by the way is fairly typical for HK boutiques, with staff trying their best to get involved in the shopping process (a combination of wanting a commission and customer service training), so don't be surprised if loud shouts of 'hello welcome!' while you enter the store are followed by very attentive SAs hovering around you as you browse. None of that is bad, since the girls tend to be very friendly and are genuinely helpful.
My browsing ended up taking me towards the far end of the room, where I sighted a small collection of flat boots and other sensible footwear (almost too sensible if you ask me). Stairs leading down to a small area revealed a cash desk in quite a lovely setting - note the smoked glass skylight and beautiful lamps. Glass shelves towards the end showcased more knitwear, a few accessories such as elbow length gloves and a small selection of delicate gold jewelry.
Heading back up, a small rack of clothes in a corner caught my eye. Filled with slightly more fancy gear, I found a few gold metallic jackets and tops, along with chic blazers and long black gowns. Pricing was in the mid-range, so you'll not be paying the outrageously large sums big-name designers ask for. And since sales were on, you were definitely getting your money's worth, considering the quality of the pieces. It's probably a store you're bound to stumble on if you're ever in HK. But if not, keep your eyes peeled for this label in your favorite department store or multi-brand boutique, since Lu Lu Cheung is constantly expanding her business and is already present in major cities around the world.

Bonnuit, Good Night & Sweet Dreams!!!
I am loving how clean the layout instore is, but I do wonder how much is natural light, and how much is artificial. You know me, I get a little antsy about that lol. But wow, the collection looks beautiful. Hope you're having a gorgeous week :)

What a great read. I recently traveled to Hong Kong in September and wish I had this guide with me then!

Looks so lovely; I really must put Hong Kong on my list of travels. It is a relief to think that Eastern designers are starting to get more recognition; I've always been infatuated with the East, and I hope the West has influenced them toooo much.
ReplyDeleteawesome:):) never heard of lulu cheung before, but her work looks top notch!
ReplyDeletethanks sharing:)
xx raez
Gorgeous store and such elegant designs. It's good to see a feature on local HK talent.
ReplyDeleteIt looks like a really fun place to shop. I like that skirt in the 2nd image, middle photo!

If I'll ever visit HK (I hope I'll), I'm sure going to visit this shop, it seems to be full of nice presents :)
ReplyDeleteAll the pieces are so fabulous.
ReplyDeleteOh all of those pieces looks fabulous! I love it.
ReplyDeleteResponse>> Thank you.=)
You have such a great eye- thanks for spotlighting this designer! I really like the draping in several of the pieces. That takes real talent to pull off (the draping I mean, not me liking it :))
ReplyDeleteIt does look very interesting.:-)Cute bird house in the front window brought a smile to my face. :-) I also feel the same interest for draping details in clothes and find myslef always very attracted to the pieces with drapery. Reading your reviews for HK is like opening a window you never new existed. Thank you for ever so inspiring texts!:-) Wishing you the most beautiful weekend.
ReplyDeleteThis is another designer I definitely want to check out if I go to Hong Kong! Her designs look really elegant and pretty! xoxoxoxo
ReplyDeleteI see some pieces that I would definitely wear.
ReplyDeleteI love that you said "almost too sensible" about the shoes, heehee.
It's sad that local designers can't always get recognition until they make it big elsewhere, I didn't know that's what happened to VT. You make me smarter :)
Happy weekend, love!
So often the way, designers have to go elsewhere before they are noticed in their home City.
ReplyDeleteLove some of the clothes, especially the metallic skirt.
Thank you for sharing this new designer with us.
Have a wonderful weekend
Hugs
Carolyn
I learn so much about others with your posts. It happens something similar in Spain. We recognize our own artist once they have succeed abroad.

I love her gray-creamy-black shades and fashion philosophy alike! The rose ruffled bib neck is just awesome. And the long gloves... to topple off if any might still stand in front!
ReplyDeleteGreat post as always!!!
ReplyDeleteLu Lu Cheung's clothes look like they could give you a perfect, very attractive, basic wardrobe - which one could vamp up with some high heels and more fancy items. Sabine x
ReplyDeletehaha that's really cute they have a birdhouse :)
ReplyDeletegod i am so jealous of your travels!
ReplyDeletemyglitteringcreation.blogspot.com
wow she is a great designer. Its sad that local designers aren't appreciated like the big names. I love the simplicity of these clothes.
ReplyDelete-Marz
The tailoring looks fantastic and the bird house there is such an adorable accent!
ReplyDeleteThe pieces you can see look truly lovely, I think the French are not the only ones that would love these cuties!
ReplyDeleteI love the audi too! Nice shops :)

amazing store, I do like the subtleness of her designs for sure. Her clothes remind me of a more artistic and creative Banana Republic, like something you can wear to work but it'd be different :D And whaaa that Audi is not yours?!? haha! Yeah Heidi definitely has some self esteen issues. Her husband is kind of a D bag though so I guess he has an influence on her behaviour? Still doesn't justify it though!
ReplyDeleteIt's very sad when people don't prefer local designers. And Lu Lu Cheung must be a very talented one!
ReplyDeleteExcellent review and pics, darling!
ReplyDeleteThanks for introducing me to this chic label!
xoxox,

They're added to the list for when I finally visit Hong Kong! I think I'll need to stop by your blog before my big trip to Asia so I know where to shop. ;-)
ReplyDeletei never thought i would say this but...i need to go shopping in hong kong! mmhmm...yessiree :)
ReplyDeletehope you had a good weekend darling!
looks like potential. Def keeping eye on Lu Lu. that's the thing about young local designers- sometimes is local market hardest. but always nice too hear a story about success.
ReplyDeleteI have been lucky enough to go to Hong Kong, but I was too young to appreciate anything like this!!! Gorgeous.
ReplyDeleteAnother amazing store! Don't love this as much as some of the others you've visited - in my opinion it's a little less creative, more minimalist and the shop fittings are sort of standard. But I love it all the same!

Very cool - beautiful car, too.
ReplyDeleteFantastic style and car, of course!
ReplyDeleteHowever, Clothes are more important for me than cars...
About the clothes, I love the long gloves so much, It is so nice to see clothes from today with those kind of gloves, they are not easy to match!
Hi there-wow, what a fabulous collection, very stylish and covetable pieces here!! Another great post my dear, lovely photos and a good review!!
ReplyDeleteI adore them all - brilliant post AS.ALWAYS.
ReplyDeletethanks so much for your wonderful comment - apologies for the ridiculously late reply!

i am really glad that you shared this post on a local hong kong designer - though it's fun to browse through designers' stores, i always found those smaller/indie brands taking my heart!!! of course, judging from this post, lu lu cheung is not quite indie nor small - but you know what i mean, right ;-)
ReplyDeletethere was a good article i read a while back about asian fashion designers in the u.s. and it also compare the new generation with Vivienne Tam how the choose a more neutralized design approach than going for the east-meet-west as Tam -
also, thanks for all your wonderful inputs on my blog - i;ve been quite busy and behind with the responses - but, please note that they were greatly appreciated and thoroughly read ;-)
xx
Nice find! I really do like her collection. I can definitely see the French liking that style as you say. Didn't realize the fashion to be found in Hong Kong as I generally have always headed to Japan. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteOoh thanks for sharing about this designer-- never heard of her before, and I shared your same frustration with HK's obsession with western designers. It seemed like there were five Miu Miu stores when I was there or a Prada whereever I turned.
ReplyDeleteLulu is great!
ReplyDeleteSold the brand in Europe for her.
Also her co-designer Otto Tang is very good.
