About a year and a half ago, I posted my recap on the Madeleine Vionnet exhibition in Paris, mentioning that John Galliano had been so enraptured by it, he had urged his entire staff to go see it. So it probably shouldn't have come as a surprise to me, when last week - a few days before it was to close - I visited the 'Future Beauty: 30 Years of Japanese Fashion' exhibition, only to bump into... John Galliano of course.
While I've sighted a fair share of designers and models before, there's always something wonderful about seeing them up close and far removed from the usual context of Fashion Week or some other random event. In this case, Galliano was impeccably dressed as usual and surrounded by only two of his colleagues/apprentices who were eagerly taking notes and admiring the different pieces along with their mentor who himself was noticeably taken by some of the more unique garments.

My favorite moment though, was when one of the staff who was visibly enamored by Galliano's style but had no idea who he was, went over, pointed to his braids and asked him if his hair was real or if he was sporting extensions (for those interested, he claimed the hair to be his own the last time he checked and that he wasn't a fan of the weave). Other than that, he spoke in hushed tones with his two consorts who ended up purchasing a few exhibition books among other things. Of course every designer is inspired by Rei, Yohji & Co., but it's nice to know that some really do take an active interest in learning more. Here's wondering how much of that will influence the next Dior or Galliano collection...

And I will be posting my summary on the actual exhibition in the near future, so stay tuned.

ReplyDeleteHow exiting! I would have fallen over! :) xoxo
ReplyDeleteWOW! I love Galliano a lot! :) This experience looks so cool!
ReplyDeleteƸ̵̡Ӝ̵̨̄Ʒ
Goodness, I would have been thrilled to meet him ANYwhere (even at fashion week :). It must have been great for him to not be recognized by someone.
ReplyDeleteoh he is such a unique bird! it is so nice when you see a celebrity or famous person and they are actually cool or understated (or just not giant jerks). patrick stewart (actor) came into our gallery recently and he was SO NICE. best handshake ever. and he was sweet, smart, polite, informed, and respectful. i am sad to say that we have had other famous folks here that were straight up JERKS. that is so unappealing, whether one is famous or not! lol
ReplyDeleteWowow what an experience. I am glad you were able to get some good photos as well!!
ReplyDeleteThat is so cool that you get to see John Galliano!! I don't know what I would do if I see him face to face. I'll probably faint or say something awkward, haha. He seems so friendly and nice!! xoxxoxo
ReplyDeletewhat a cool and handsome man!

Oh, if only I had "sightings" like this while out and about - too cool!! :)
ReplyDeleteLove the pictures!
ReplyDeleteGood to know John Galliano doesn't sport the weave...lol!
great blog :)
ReplyDeletewow that is cool that you saw John Galliano, and funny that people actually asked him about his hair! haha can you imagine if they were rude and said something like "man you looked like a mess cut it off" and then relizing who he was?! ohh my.
ReplyDeleteAhh! I love Galliano. He looks like such a fun personality! I can't believe you got to see him! I'd be so shy and just stand there gawking. He looks fabulous here!

That's such a cool sighting!! It would have to be someone who has no clue who he is to have the balls to go up and ask something like that of him. Did you hear his response?
ReplyDeleteOMG that is a mega fashion star spotting! did u actually get to speak with him?

Wow that is so cool that you saw him!!! I would have been completely starstruck as well. You can tell just by looking at him that he's influential and successful. I think it is his clear sense of style and the way he carries himself. Confidence really does tell a lot about a person. ;)
ReplyDeleteAmazing photos!
ReplyDeleteTHE MAN. THE LEGEND. What a happy accident that you happened to be there when he was. You must dish on his height--I've always supposed him to be extremely short for some reason...then again knowing the answer to that question really has no relevance whatsoever, I'm just curious ;)
ReplyDeletenever say never, Mr Galliano. haha.
ReplyDelete@Style Porn: I can't recall his exact height, but from what I remember he was slightly shorter than me (I'm 5'8), so he's not tall, but not terribly short either. I think he might give that impression since he's often surrounded by super tall models ;-)
ReplyDeleteI'm fascinated by the hair trivia. Good to know!
ReplyDeletesounds exciting. he's very talented! love his style- it's amazing. thanks for sharing. can't wait to see the exhibition photos!
ReplyDeletehope you're having a great weekend

It is always such a fantastic experience to be in his presence. Thank you for this interesting post and the photographs! I still can not believe that there are people out there who really have no idea who John Galliano is! And yes, he looks, amazing, well put together, holding his own..and what a lucky chance to see him in person.I still think you should have walked right up to him.:-)))You are one very very lucky girl.:-)))I am wishing you happy Valentine's Day filled with love and unexpected surprises.:-)
ReplyDeleteWhat a great story...Must have been such a wonderful experience for you! Exciting!

Hi there-what an amazing story and how great to have been there and got these fabulous photos too!! xx
ReplyDeleteOooh wooow, gorgeous post!!
ReplyDelete@Couture Millinery Atelier: I think if I had been in a fashion or event setting, I definitely would have approached him, but I preferred to remain incognito as an admirer of his work, just to observe him and not have him feel like he was being watched (ok, I still ended up watching him for a bit ;-). The museum lady actually ended up shouting after him that she loved his individual style and that he should continue to dress that way. Haha. I'm sure she was mortified when she eventually found out who he was...
ReplyDeletethat is a worth-your-while sighting!!!
ReplyDeleteJohn Galliano is amazing!
ReplyDeleteIt's always great to run into someone that is admired the world over.

Isn't it wonderful to realize how magnificent and ordinary all our faves are!?
ReplyDeleteAaaahhh so it was you the lucky one!! One of your readers told me about the Galliano thing on twitter (I went to that exhibition too -it was amazing- and I sooo envy you!!) but when I saw your comment on my blog I didn't make the connection from your name :p
ReplyDeleteBy the way, thanks for passing by my blog and for saying hello, I really like yours, I am happy I discovered it :D
Goodnight!

Lucky Girl! He seems different in these pics (as in really nice and grounded) from the usual over the top affair that is Jhon Galliano. Did you ask him for a pic?

It's so exciting that you not only got to see an amazing exhibit, but saw Galliano there! I heard that the Vionnet exhibition left him speechless (astounding, considering he's the effervescent Galliano), so I'm sure his hushed tones here show how impressive the Japanese designs were.
