ba&sh (Paris, France)

ba&sh store paris
Ask anyone to define 'effortless chic' and they'll probably tell you it's about being comfortable in what you're wearing, finding an outfit that fits both you and your lifestyle and feeling confident with your look (and yourself of course). This is easier said than done, because there are plenty of girls who feel that way about a velour tracksuit and UGGs. It's the 'chic' part that's tricky - a slightly overused term in the fashion world that usually gets thrown in if someone can't think of another word for 'stylish' - something that's entirely subjective and relative to the person wearing the outfit. Which is why when people ask me how to emulate the casual yet beautiful look that has come to define French style, I spare them the numerous clichés or adjectives and just say: "shop where the locals shop".

ba&sh parisA selection from the SS10 lookbook (images: ba&sh).

Of course clothing is only part of the equation to looking good without resembling someone who's tried too hard, but it's the first and easiest step in the right direction. The average French woman will probably have a few designer pieces in her wardrobe, a selection of vintage perhaps and a small amount of trendier items from the fast-fashion brands. The bulk of her wardrobe will most likely stem from the local mid-market high street though - a category that combines contemporary current season style with the quality of an investment piece. While some of these brands follow a certain aesthetic, usually boho (Maje, Antik Batik) or rock (Zadig & Voltaire, American Retro), ba&sh is the perfect example of how an ideal wardrobe would look like - and not surprisingly that happens to be the exact concept of the label. Founded by high school friends Barbara Boccara and Sharon Krief (the brand name is derived from the first two letters of their first names) who had no prior design experience at all, the idea behind ba&sh was to create the perfect everyday 'ideal closet' for the woman. They launched their line in 2003, when it was first sold in Parisian department stores. A year later their first flagship opened and the brand is now stocked in over 500 outlets worldwide.

ba&sh parisThe cozy interior of the store as seen from the entrance. The windows behind the cash desk reveal a view of the back garden.

Of course even an 'ideal closet' is subjective, and in this case it's based entirely on what Boccara and Krief would like to wear. Thankfully these women have impeccable taste: the clothes are unfussy, feminine, edgy and cool at the same time. What's even better is that the range represents every look a girl could want, whether it's grunge, country, romance or hippie. After all, a perfect wardrobe is one that adapts to your moods and needs.

ba&sh parisRacks full of beautiful and cute items including the beaded 'peacock' dress and the linen dresses with a check pattern.

The stores themselves are fairly small with a simple decor that's kept in warm hues and thus feels quite inviting. Almost like you're entering a little haven where you can try on clothes for the next hour. The shop featured here is the one in the Marais, though all flagships have similar interiors. As with all stores in this mid-range category, you can expect great personal service and consultation from the staff, minus the extortionate price tag you'd find in a high-end boutique... though depending on what you're looking at, the items aren't incredibly cheap either, but worth the money. It might not take long to navigate the store, but it will probably take you that much longer to decide on what you want to try on or if you can justify getting an item in every single color.

ba&sh parisPreppy coats and cool biker jackets are displayed throughout.

ba&sh parisA few looks from FW09 (left) and the very sparkly sequined dresses from SS10 (right).

While the FW09 collection was marked by dark dresses and cool fringed flat boots, the SS10 range is a mix of beautiful floral pieces, cool leather jackets, soft suede dresses and embroidered linen tops. Even the simpler items are far from boring and the most refreshing thing about ba&sh is that they somehow manage to integrate a trend factor into the looks, but do it in such a subtle way you'll be able to wear the outfits years from now without looking passé. It also means that if you left the store now, sporting any item from the current lookbook, you won't run the risk of resembling a fashion victim.

ba&sh parisAccessories and shoes on the main table, such as the adorable fringed booties and the slouchy bags.

My favorite standout pieces during my last visit included the stunning sequined dresses (available in both gold and silver) and all the suede looks, which come as vests, wrap dresses and long tunics - again available in several colorways. The non-leather items are made of natural fabrics which adds to the more luxe vibe and gives even the more modest items a sophisticated quality. Shoes and bags are available as well, including both heeled and flat sandals and the most gorgeous leather totes with a cut-out fringe detailing.

ba&sh parisSoft leather and suede pieces from SS10 including jackets and dresses.

As a final note, I thought I'd mention that it isn't just women who are going crazy for these relaxed feminine looks, but men love them too... yes, that's right, the male species isn't all set on seeing girls in bodycon dresses, most likely because casual cool is anything but high maintenance. I live five seconds away from a ba&sh store and see just as many guys glued to the windows admiring the leather jackets or silk dresses as I do women. Case in point, even my better half keeps bugging me to get their suede or maxi dresses every time we pass the shop, so I just might... with his credit card (insert evil laughter here). No just kidding... kind of. With a store so close, the temptation to buy every item I see is just too big, so I might just stay away until the sales. But if you want to spend a bit of money, you just might be tempted as well: ba&sh is available throughout the world if you're not in Paris, but better (or worse?) yet, they have an online store which stocks almost every piece from their current collection. Credit cards and male partners beware...

ba&sh parisI had no idea how many cool bags ba&sh had until my visit last week and a quick browse on the homepage. I need to go back to the store... (images: ba&sh).

  5. There's always something to learn here... And it's great that you can tell us about some secret places that could help us look a little bit like a French girl. I adore some of the looks, especially, the brown leather jacket, but also think that one needs to be "French sized" to pull most of the designs off. :)

    Have a wonderful weekend!

  7. I found the discussion of "effortless French chic" in this post so interesting. People always try to break down what makes a Parisian girl so stylish and I've found that most descriptions and explanations come up short.

  10. Immediately went to their website - very french, very tempting. Luckily I didn't understand how to buy anything there. But I very much agree with your observations about the 'chic' woman.

  11. that's good to hear that men likes the relaxed feminie looks as well, and ugh I am not a fan of uggs, i mean they look good when they're new, but when they get old they sag around the ankles and make you look funny whne you walk. And I don't know a single guy who likes them!!

  14. casual cool is the way to go! body con can't be worn by all, and many times it just looks TACKY! or maybe i am just a hater because i can't wear that stuff. LOL!

i hope you get that suede dress. it is MARVELOUS! just stunning. and still comfortable and glorious and doesn't look like it is trying so hard.

p.s. the frenchies do so many things right. :)

  15. LOVE your final note. lol. ok, i sound desperate. even if no man appreciates these clothes on me, i'd wear them for myself anyway. i really relate with this post, thanks for sharing.

thanks for the education on why vintage is not big in HK. i didn't realise so. it sure sounds very contrived. fake. like the vibe i got from tokyo... putting it simplistically, of course. i wonder if they shun vintage-inspired clothing? they're everywhere now, it seems. i bought some cheap cut-out bareback dresses from etsy since a long time back and they're staying in cold storage. still too chicken to wear them out.

  17. What a lovely brand! I hadn't heard of them, and probably never would have, if you hadn't featured them. I will probably log on their site and see what I can buy, since I don't have the luxury of an indulging male partner. I love the fringed boots. I am such a sucker for them.

  19. Whenever I visit France (and Paris in particular), I'm regularly amazed not only at how chic French women appear but how fit! Yet they neither appear overly much to exercise nor to eat!!

  35. Love the oversized blazer look in their SS10 lookbook. It's the epitome of effortless cool. I agree with you on the bodycon dress point- I'm finding esp. with male fashion bloggers that they prefer the lower maintenance look. Hope you're having a wonderful weekend! xo, mel

  44. Man, it takes so much effort to look effortless, doesn't it?

Would you also say the French chicness comes from natural materials and colours you'd actually find in nature? It's been years since I've been but I remember a lot of sophisticated colour palettes. In Vancouver there are so many synthetics, so much lycra.

    ba&sh looks gorgeous!

  45. I'm sure you'll have a ton of fun swiping your hubby's credit card to buy the entire collection here, LOL! Ok, some... ;) Thanks for the fashion education on the "effortless French chic", the French (and Europeans in general) are truly the chicest citizens on earth! =)

  47. dear - i am always amazed at how you managed to find different angles to approach each post of yours and make them different yet coherent to your style at the same time - i especially enjoyed how you used a typical french woman's closet as the starting point and led it into the ba$sh ... effortless is indeed the key to dress - too-much-planning tends to wash down the nuance of the person behind the clothing .... i prefer such nuances ;-)

btw: thanks for your always sweet words on my little things :-) i am so happy you liked them! - as for capturing things that caught your attention ... it is really quite challenging, especially when you are on the go - but really worthy to keep on trying ... it took me a long time before figuring out ways .. still often i found myself regretting missing a shot ;-)))

have a fantastic week ahead of you, xx

  60. My fingers are actually itching to book a flight to Paris right now!
I've always admired French style, and I think you hit the nail on the head when you pointed out most French women tend to have a lot of staple classics as opposed to fast fashion pieces in their wardrobe.
I'd love to be able to find a similar boutique with so many classic but pretty pieces. Some of those bags are absolutely lush..... arghghgh!!!!
