Shopping in Hong Kong can be an overwhelming experience, regardless of whether you've visited the city before. Luxury flagships, smaller boutiques and retail chains can be found on every street, in various malls and when you least expect it, even office or apartment buildings will house a shop or two. In my quest to find a high street brand that was a bit more local than the countless Mangos or Uniqlos, I stumbled upon a fashion label that stood out from the rest, primarily because it chose to go with a more unique decor than the usual grungy gray or minimal white. Bess (not to be confused with the American punk glam label with the same name) can easily be mistaken for a foreign brand. While the previously featured 2% chose to go with a Japanese vibe, this company decided to tackle a more Western look, resulting in a range of casual chic clothes that would rival any European high street brand.
Very little is known about the company except for the fact that it was founded in 1993 with the aim of blending elegance with a more urban aesthetic. What I quickly realized while browsing, is that unlike most lower-end labels that seem to have an over-the-top "let's stud, distress, embellish and shred our pieces so it looks totally Balmain meets Alexander Wang"-attitude, is that Bess has decided to keep their range fairly simple. It's not just a refreshing change from the overly trendy pieces you'll find elsewhere, but in choosing to focus on a more subtle style, the items you'll find here won't just look more timeless but also of higher quality, as you won't need to fear the look of cheap lace or sequins falling off your dress.
Part of the store as seen from the front (left), a selection of scarves (top) and a white hoodie next to a vintage sewing machine (right).
The very antique looking cash desk surrounded by memorabilia (left). Racks and racks of clothes (right).
Another part of the store featured a saddle and for those who need a rest, a comfy couch was available too.The one thing that is typical about Bess is that all their stores are situated in shopping centers. It's a shame because this is the kind of boutique that really would have benefited from a real storefront and natural lighting. The interiors could be described as charming rustic chic: an entire wall shelf filled with vintage looking frames, vases and other items could be found behind a cash desk, fake animal skulls adorned the walls along with whitewashed window shutters, while old suitcases could be found in various corners of the boutique. White brick walls provided the backdrop, giving you the impression you're in an old cottage. The sales area itself was very small and crammed with items, but because I chose to go to a slightly less busy outlet, the various shoppers would enter then leave the area so quickly you never had the feeling it was too cramped.
More chic looks including cardigans with fur collars and jumpers (left). Wall decoration included vintage inspired clocks and white shelves filled with statues (right). Most of the clothing was kept in muted colors of brown, taupe, black and gray - with occasional flashes of red, visible in the tartan shirts - or orange, green and blue as seen on various knits and dresses. Everything was very wearable, but because of the slouchy cut and effortless tailoring, the pieces are more cool than boring. They're also easy to integrate into any wardrobe. Channeling the country romance look? Pick a plaid skirt and a cowboy hat. If you're looking for something a bit more French, you'll find Breton striped tees and fringed scarves. For a grunge style, there are plenty of soft gray cardigans and perfectly faded jeans. What makes it all the more fun to browse, is the fact that every now and then, your gaze will fall upon another cute decor item, whether it's the jewelry cabinet near the entrance, the horse saddle next to a table or the comfy looking sofa in front of the changing rooms.
Faux animal skulls added an interesting touch (left). A subtle floral printed sweater competes with classic tartan (left).
Some country chic gear towards the back (left) and cute changing rooms with the typical white brick walls (right). And a short note to also take a look at some of their accessories. I spied plenty of soft leather hobo bags, cute clutches and knee high boots. At the time I went, none of the SS10 items were available for viewing yet, but most of what I saw could easily be worn throughout Spring, especially the army jackets and khaki trousers that work well with the upcoming military trend.
Don't forget to accessorize: a nice selection of hats, boots, scarves and bags.
A few khakis to complete the army-inspired look (left) and fake windows decorate a few walls (right).Because the store is quite small, it won't take too long to browse, though you shouldn't underestimate the amount of clothing Hong Kong stores manage to stuff on their racks and shelves. Staff was very friendly and unlike many other local stores, they won't follow you around like a puppy hoping for a snack (trust me, this can get seriously annoying when shopping in Asia). The pricing is very competitive and comparable to that of other lower-end retail stores like Zara, with the added benefit that what you're getting here will be slightly more unique. There are over a dozen retail outlets around Hong Kong, though I'm not quite sure if their range is available outside the country as well, but this gives you an even better excuse to pick something up if you're ever in town.

i've always wondered about bess. i'm going to back and have a proper read of your post (and violent cats - ouch!!).
ReplyDeleteOh looks like another lovely store!=)
ReplyDeleteOh my! I really like Bess... and I am quite jealous you were able to visit their store. Thanks for sharing the pictures, the place is as cool as their clothing, I get quite a feeling of All Saints in it too.
ReplyDeleteSee you soon.
gorgeous. love how everything layers together so well.

i love the comfortable, casual, elegant, chic, street look of this clothing! just fabulous!!! and the way the stores are decorated? LOVE IT!!! sometimes that sleek modern dimly lit crap gets REALLY OLD, and it is fun to see something more funky and rustic that has character. SUPER FIND!!!
ReplyDeleteI like a label that cultivates an air of mystery. It even seems to come through in the styling of the displays.
ReplyDeleteI like what I see & what I read. It is a shame they are located in the typical shopping centers. Takes a way a bit of the ultimate experience. So good to hear from you today. I want you to know how I appreciate your comments. In my way it helps. I should of mentioned the move would be not permanent, a year or two, but it's a big one for this American girl. I would be thrilled to ever meet you. Your style sense and knowledge continue to impress and amaze. Have a great time in Scotland & think of me.
ReplyDeleteCheers x
How fabulous! And at Zara like prices...even better! It's so true what you said about cheap lace - or clothing in general. It's so important to remember that just because something is inexpensive doesn't mean it needs to be cheaply made, I'd rather see someone buy one good quality item at a fair price rather than a bunch trendy cheaply made items at bargain prices...it's just a waste of money in the end.
ReplyDeletep.s. your gut tells me you like me right??? LOL, you know that won't stop me from coming here.
xo
such great pieces here. and so warm+wintery+layery. thanks for sharing hon:)
ReplyDeleteheck yes! this is my kind of store. i am loving all the pieces from plaid to fur to destroyed jeans to boots and studs....yes yes yes please!

ReplyDeleteHaute World, you have been awarded The Kreativ Blogger award! As they say "come and get it" and pass it on :)
ReplyDeleteWow!! Looks like a store that I want to check out! I really like their bags and clutches! xoxoxoxo
ReplyDeleteI am adoring the chic simplicity of Bess. I can't comment on the other fashions in Hong Kong, but I can say that many stores have been after the "lets embellish everything we can make" look and it's getting kind of overwhelming to see.
ReplyDeleteI need to get to Hong Kong fast!
wow their clothes look quite fab
ReplyDeleteI love their clothes esp the fur coat, it's very beautiful!
ReplyDeletexxx
effortless style! so chic and wearable, I love all the pieces.

ReplyDeleteHappy sweet thursday to youuu currently staying in London ;)
ReplyDeleteHope the weather is fine and you have too much snow at all!
The brick walls inside and the "touch of vintage" inside the store are something I like very much; and the idea of Bess keeping their range fairly simple. Love in your phtos the antique looking cash desk, the jewelry cabinet and the faux windows!!!
Wishing you a joyful stay in London and a beautiful rest of the week ahead!!!
Hi,
ReplyDeleteMy first visit on your blog, and already adore it. I wonder about shopping in Hong Kong, they said in HK everything is taxfree and a shopping heaven, but if Im going to buy ,like frem Chanel , LV and etc. Does they cost more or twice so much than in europe and US?
Thanks.
Oh so gorgeous. It reminds me a bit of Anthropologie or Urban Outfitters
ReplyDeleteThe F/W 2009 Lookbook is AMAZING! I really love the way they take inspiration from Southwestern culture, and Bohemian styles to create looks all their own. I want it all!! :)
ReplyDeleteI love all the slouchy, well-worn layers! And I love the thrift store vibe of the store!
ReplyDeleteHi lady! OK, this looks like my kind of store. I love the layout and it just looks like it would be a fun place to shop in. The accessories look fabulous!

ReplyDeleteExcellent post*°*°*
I am loving the way they styled the models' hair in these pictures. Might try one of the styles tomorrow. Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteFor some reason this cowboy, western, grungy, layering style does not really work for me but someday, when I'm brave enough to try it again, I'll come back to this post for reference! ...And maybe I'll checkout this store once I find myself in HK again someday!! =)
ReplyDeleteOh I love this layering style. Not only does it look really cute, but it also keeps me warm! Hahah I am always cold! I am glad dressing practically is somewhat in style :)
ReplyDeleteCan I just say that I envy your life? You visit the most wonderful place!
ReplyDeleteLooks like a fun store to shop in! Their clothes look so wearable and I really love the decor.
ReplyDeleteIt looks like it has a very antiquey/garagey feel to it. I love the vibe. Some of those clothes look so comfy, like I could wear them totally effortlessly x
ReplyDeleteFW09 is amazing.
ReplyDeleteR.I.P McQueen.
the fw09 looks are quite different from the others shown above. almost like a redux of a time like the... 80s/90s, me thinks.
ReplyDeletei just read of McQueen's demise. first saw it on another blog with this face posted but i didn't know that's him.
At the end of all of this you will make me move to Hong Kong! :-))) I never thought of HK as shopping heaven, I have you to thank for it :-))). Wishing you the most beautiful Valentine's weekend filled with love and joy.
ReplyDeleteP.S. I am still recovering form the news of McQueens death. I think nothing, no explanation will ever make it right. Terrible loss.

I like the layered look alot, and there's such an art to it, like making it look stylishly layered instead of frumpy homeless person layered. The interior of the store shows off a lot of character too. Hope you have a great weekend!
ReplyDeletei like these pieces & i like the look of the shop, lots to look at like an aladdin's cave is a good sign
ReplyDeleteShopping in HK is like Singapore. A gal can just trip on a store. : ) It's sensory over load but fun. : )
ReplyDeletei've never heard of this label in hk - where is this store located? i like the casual layering - definitely wearable looks that's not overly trendy (and a you pointed out, trended to the death).
ReplyDeletehaha yes he knows and now turns a blind eye. what can i say except i'm bringing joy to the people?
I loved Hong Kong for shopping and the 2 days we were there were not long enough.
ReplyDeleteThank you for sharing the fabulous photos and your review. Bess, looks like a wonderful place to shop.
Happy weekend
Hugs

I like the mix of various influences here, as well as the lovely accessories. In my head, I can see myself play with them in different ways. The store looks so inviting. I love how each store, like individuals, can have a distinct personality. Each and every one of them.

So glad I returned to blogging :) I like the style a lot, it captures my casual moods perfectly. I also like the shuttered windows and old suitcases, similar to my cottage chic taste.
ReplyDeleteNow if you can find old world/ Grecian drapy elegance for my night clothes - I would be set.
I specially love the lookbook, it's great
