Being ill sucks. So does jet lag. Combine the two and what you get is a grumpy tired me who lacks the energy to sort through all the photos taken during my travels in the past few weeks. Which is my excuse for digging out these Isabel Marant shots that were already on my laptop. But to be honest, I've been meaning to post these for a while, as I've long had the biggest crush on her collections which has only grown since I moved to Paris.
FW09 campaign featuring Milla Jovovich who seems to like grabbing her hair... (images: Isabel Marant). What I probably love most is how Marant's pieces represent Parisian chic like nothing else. Tourists who come to Paris hoping to catch a glimpse of girls strutting around in stilettos and wearing Chanel tweed tend to be disappointed by this look. But as a woman who designs clothing for other women (and herself), casual chic comfort was always the key to what Marant created, resulting in the effortless cool look that has since represented French style. During last December's sample sales, I witnessed Parisian girls rushing towards the Marant racks, piling everything they could find by the label in their little baskets, while YSL, Gucci and other big-name international brands were left somewhat ignored. Yet despite attending fashion school in Paris, followed by stints at Michel Klein and Yohji Yamamoto to name a few, the first things Marant created under her own name back in 1989 were jewelry and accessories - not clothes. She released a small line of knits and jerseys under the brand 'Twen' a year later, which in 1994 was officially renamed to 'Isabel Marant'. Subsequent launches included the diffusion line 'Étoile' and a range of children's wear, inspired by the birth of her son in 2003.
All her boutiques have the same look and feel, though I favor the two in the Marais district over the Left Bank location. Rue de Charonne is where the first boutique was opened in 1998 and it still remains special and quaint because of this. For a bigger selection and a loftier atmosphere, the main flagship on rue Saintonge is the place to be. And don't go in without checking out the store windows first... unlike other designers who opt for regular mannequins, Marant prefers the use of quirky Stone Age inspired statues and other artifacts. The effect is both playful and raw with the pebble and cactus garden in some windows adding an extra touch.
The interior follows the same organic feel, but is less cluttered and very spacious. Despite the modern sleek lines and the airy ambiance, the wood paneling of the floor and shelves along with the view of the back garden make the boutique more welcoming than intimidating. There's hardly any furniture aside from a few bamboo chairs and the modern closets which house the racks of clothes. Turn left and you'll see a corner showcasing some of the children's clothes in a mini cabinet. Unfortunately these are definitely too small for any adult to wear (yes, I may have tried...). The small cases on the wall nearby display the jewelry, mostly in silver or adorned with semi-precious stones.
Anyone who's paid any attention to fashion knows that aside from the cool clothes, Marant is responsible for last year's ultimate 'it' shoes - first the chain suede boots for SS09 followed by the studded 'Otway' ankle bootie for FW09. Girls across the globe went crazy trying to source these items - many were told they were sold out or not in stock. Strangely these shoes were available in abundance in Paris... and few were buying them. I'm sure this would make a great case study on how hype is created when an item isn't just worn by celebrities or featured in editorials, but becomes difficult to obtain and carries an exorbitant price tag. For anyone who's still interested (and in Paris) - both these boots are now on sale at 40% off, but beware that the quality is rather disappointing as reviewed by fellow bloggers Sofie and Hanh, so even the markdown might not justify getting them - though they are still very pretty.
More FW looks including cosy fur (left) and last season's chain boots (right).
Loving the open space (left) and the large changing room area (right).Needless to say, I saw plenty of these boots during my visit to the boutique (though at the time they were still full-priced). But like most consumers in-store, I was more focused on the fantastic fur creations, draped shirt-dresses, tweed or herringbone coats, leopard print jackets, ruched long skirts and anything else from the current hard rock meets hippie collection. Even though the store was buzzing, the large floor area made it easy to browse. Extra attention should also be placed on the soft slouchy leather bags... some studded, others plain (incidentally Jerome Dreyfuss happens to be Marant's husband) and the soft wool and cashmere scarves which will undoubtedly make any outfit look Parisian chic.
A small section of outfits in the middle section of the store (left). The trendiest items at a glance: fur and leopard print jackets (right). The front section contained mainly the dressier runway looks, but if you're in need of something more casual, the majority of the grungy tees, knits and the complete 'Étoile' range - mainly consisting of tartan shirts and dresses - is in the back. The small garden gives this section an extra bit of light and for the ultimate experience, you'll probably want to try on some of the clothes in the large changing rooms.
Some of the SS10 items were also on display last week and I can already tell these will be very tempting - my favorite items being the colorful embellished jackets, striped dresses and draped vests.
Even though Marant has gained international popularity, her boutiques have yet to expand beyond Paris, with the exception of Hong Kong, which strangely has two flagships, and New York & LA where two boutiques will supposedly open this summer. I'm guessing more stores may pop up in the near future, but according to Marant, she'd like to keep her business small to avoid oversaturating the market. Nevertheless some select/old-season pieces are available online via Yoox, or check out the international stockists on the official homepage for more.

ReplyDeleteI don't know much of Isabel Marant, but I love what you've described. And I enjoy that her boutique has the feeling that you could take a deep breath in one as though you were outdoors or something (not sure how much sense that made...)!

ReplyDeleteOh, be still my heart. I am utterly obsessed with Isabel Marant - I should love to live in this boutique!! :)
ReplyDeleteI love how Isabel Marant is kind of picky and unaccessible in this age where everything and everyone is available anywhere.
ReplyDeleteAnd those boots, I die.

Hey, darling! Loved this post very much. Wishing you a speedy recovery and a lovely weekend!!! x
ReplyDeleteI am so sorry to hear you feel a bit sick, wishing you all the health in the world. So amazing to me that even being ill you amange to write such a fantastic review! First of all, thank you for intorducing me to the new name. I, to my great shame, never heard of Isabel Marant. Her Collection does look very chic and boutique look like a place where I would love to spent a considerable amount of time. Thank you for another great tip!
ReplyDeleteWhen it comes to your question about pcitures of the hats that were not included in Rei's Collection - Mr. Jones, understandably so, is very guarded about letting anyone take pictures of what is going on in the workshop. I think he is protecting not only designs and fabrics selected for the new Collections, but the DNA of the techniques as well. I respected his wishes and simply did not attempt to make any pictures. Besides, the intensity and volume of work were so crazy that sometime it was not enough time to even have a glass of water :-) Thank you for your wonderful comment and wishing you to get well very soon.
I have a thing against Marant because she's the epitome of that very artificial french 'natural' look... but sometimes the stuff is quite good, I have to admit ;D
ReplyDeleteBe well my friend. Hoping the days ahead bring you good health and some warm sun. Isabel's fashions reflect a style of ease and savoir-faire. Adore the studded boots & bags. Your knowledge of designers is astounding.
ReplyDeleteThank you for all your very kind and thoughtful comments over the months. They have meant the world. Take much care, xx deb
Oh noooo, wishing Ur speedy recovery, darling! So sorry...
ReplyDeleteI agree with rossovelvet!
P.S.: ♥Please don't forget to join the Miss C. Alexandria giveaway!♥

by the way: You are so right with YSL Rive Gauche collection. I would like something from YSL Y- mail from collection. For example a bangle! Their price is reasonable (esp. sale price) YUMMY!
ReplyDeletehey girl, thanks so much for your sweet comment : ) aw milla jovovich is so pretty ! the studded clutch and shoes are a killer !
ReplyDeletexx lue
hi lovely! hope you've been well!
ReplyDeletehappy new year!
<3
As always, thank you for adding to my fashion education. I think all these designs are great!
ReplyDeleteFeel better!
Oh and you know I love love LOVE your blog. But is there any way we could get bigger images? I want to SEE it all! :) But focus on getting better for now..
Another brand I shall look into ... it's like an education here ... Merci!
ReplyDelete@Alyssa: I will most likely re-do the blog design at some point to widen the middle column allowing for larger pictures (if I ever find the time), but just so you know... clicking on any image will enlarge it!
ReplyDeleteI also find the zoom function on browsers to be useful (it's a simple drag on the mousepad for the Mac... no idea about PCs). I use this a lot on blogs where I find the font to be unreadable or want to zoom in on the pics. HTH!
I recently read an article on her and she seemed like an interesting persona.
ReplyDeleteHi there-wishing you a very speedy recovery my dear. Another fabulous post and great review and pictures, I would adore a piece from her collection, it really is a covetable label to have!! Have a great Sunday!!
ReplyDeleteLooooove Isabel Marant.... all those boots are so incredible!
ReplyDeleteAdore this post, darling!
Feel better :)
xoxox,
CC
I love Isabel Marant!! I tend to save up for her pieces. They remain quite expensive here in Toronto :0
ReplyDeleteoh i love the 'it' boot, so pretty!
ReplyDeleteHoep you feel better soon too!
The collection is wonderful! Just the fact that the store is in Paris makes it already fabulous! Great post, have a nice week!!
ReplyDeletealways a pleasure to come and read your blog....
ReplyDeleteThe Lanvin's windows are amazing, I love so much modernity with that much glamour.... Very found of them....
Glad to hear you're well now. Or at least well enough to share this to us! I was also down with a nasty cold this week. It was quite bad and don't wish it on anyone!
ReplyDeleteI have to admit I was just introduced to Isabel Marant last year when I started blogging! So I'm quite a newbie with anything Marant. Well, except for the Otway booties that I could recognize from a mile away! The shop is quite off from central Paris but hope to visit someday!
Happy New Year to you as well!
PS - Do have to ask this, when you take photos inside the shops, do you ask permission from the SA? I sort of wanted to take pix sometimes but too shy to ask! Do you have tips? ;)
It must be me, but all I knew about Isabel Marant so far was the "the bootie of the season". Well this says everything about me...Thanks for opening my eyes!
ReplyDeleteI really love your holistic look at fashion. Not only do you examine the clothing, you also look at decor and lighting and furniture and so many other things that contribute to the experience. It's very thorough and really refreshing. :-)
ReplyDeleteI hope you start feeling better really soon!
ReplyDeleteI love Isabel Marant - especially her shoes and accessories. She just does no wrong in my eyes!
Hope you were able to enjoy the weekend in spite of being ill :(
Now look what you did being ill AND jetlagged! I always learn something when I come here. When we lived in Paris last year I wanted to come home with something of Isabel Marant's but I think I put too much pressure on myself to find the 'perfect' piece, when in fact anything would have been a valuable addition to my wardrobe. (Her PR people are the most polite I have ever had the pleasure of dealing with!)
ReplyDeleteI hope you feel better soon! ♥
feel better soon! I love Marant and the boutique looks fantastic. I love the use of studs... those booties are amazing!
ReplyDeleteHope you'll feel better soon! Love Isabel Marant, and I would like to visit that store.
ReplyDeleteSo sorry to hear that you are not well and I hope that you are feeling better real soon.
ReplyDeleteI loved seeing the Isabel Marant Boutique and what fabulous clothes ~ thank you.
Hugs
Carolyn
J'adore Isabel Marant - like you said, she truly represents Parisian style.
ReplyDeleteI know its so sucky, I hope you feel much better soon darling - mine doesn't want to seem to leave!
Thanks so much for the lovely comment - sorry for such a late reply!
Stay safe and chic darling

That's hysterical that those much coveted booties weren't so fabulous after all. I hope you're on the mend soon!
ReplyDeleteOh I hope you feel better! I love the casual chic comfort look that you have described here in this lovely boutique and I especially love the looks in that last set of photos. I especially like the 3 looks on the left. Great post and so interesting as always!

I LOVE Isabel Marant!!!
ReplyDeleteIf I could, I'd buy my clothes only from her!
I have been only to her boutique on rue Jacob, close to the Dreyfuss boutique! I should definitely visit her biggest shop on rue Saintonge, as you said :)
Happy sweeet monday to you ;)
ReplyDeleteI`m finally back from Italy... can you believe there was also a little bit snow in Florence ... brrh... ;)
I never went to the Marant store in Paris. Can´t believe it ;)
Love the wood details of the interior design.
Marant was actually never on my wishlist but since last year I watch her collection to see what she designed... excited to see what Net-a-Porter ordered from her collection...
Have a beautiful evening ahead!!
So sorry to hear you are/were sick! Hope you are doing better!!!!
i seriously just did a high pitch shriek to myself after seeing marant's collection and SHOESSS!!!! ahhhh!!! i want it ALL!!!
ReplyDeleteshe really does no wrong.
ps. hope you feel better.
Amazing post, love all of these photos.
ReplyDeleteHer collections are amazing, such Parisian chic.
Especially love her new SS10 one :)
xx
Those characters in the shop window are so awesome. And the goods you find inside are stunning, too
ReplyDelete*Nathalie
P.S.: Get well soon
Wow! It looks amazing, those shoessss! Want want want!
ReplyDeleteAnother great post. I love Milla Jovovich.
ReplyDeleteHope you feel better soon!
Great review- I actually learned something: that Marant started out in accessory design versus apparel. Very cool. Especially since, I fell for the hype around those studded booties, and even went so far as contacting the PR and showroom to find out where I could get them in NY. Nevermind how I would actually pay for them-- I just wanted to be able to hold them and check them out in person! I read about the quality on other blogs, too, so I'm sort of glad I never ended up getting them.
ReplyDeleteP.S. Kirkwood sample sale sounds like heaven. Argh!
oh, wow! i love isabel marant probably more than any other designer right now. you're so lucky!
ReplyDeleteSoon there will be a bald patch there from all that hair grabbing. :/
ReplyDeleteSS10 collect dress are hot the second from the left and the last one on the right. Lovely and not over exaggerated ideas like usual top catwalk pieces.

So fabulous!! I love all the furs. :) I hope you feel better soon, dear! xoxo
ReplyDeleteOoh HK has two flagships? i'll note that for my next trip.
ReplyDeleteoh i love children's clothes. i hope when I have little one I can dress her/him in pretty clothes like these.
i know what you mean about sorting through travel photos; i'm still doing the same and procastinating.
Yes, let's meet when i'm in Paris. hopefully you are in town. it'll be sometiem in August probably so i'll let you know when i book.
Being ill AND jet lag? You poor thing!
ReplyDeleteLOL at Milla's hair pulling. Maybe it releases stress.
She certainly know what to do with studs!
Feel better soon, love.
xo
I really think you should write a book about all these shops, I would certainly buy it!

Hello, thanks so much for this article. Can you let me know if the fur jackets are on sale and at how much?? Thank you!!
ReplyDeleteCan you please transport me there???
ReplyDeleteHi! Amazing photos! Love this post and love Isabel Marant. Thnaks for sharing! Kiss!
ReplyDeleteHope you feel better soon! I'm coming down with something myself, ugh! I love that you tried to fit into the children's clothes- totally something I would have done/have done :) The fur creations are what I noticed the most about the different pieces and I love the red wall that stands as the background for the garden! Hope you have a great week!! xo, Mel
ReplyDelete@Anonymous: The fur jackets went on sale along with everything else from the FW09 collection, but I don't know the exact price. They were no longer available in the store I went to last week (the pics were taken in December). You might want to call the Isabel Marant boutiques or PR offices to check for stock and pricing, though I believe they don't ship internationally from Paris.
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for the helpful reply Haute-Shopper!! I just found your blog and really enjoy it :)
ReplyDeletegreat write up - you really get a feel for the place.
ReplyDeleteShe is coming to NY (finally)!

Hi
ReplyDeleteVery impressive blog for Isabel Marant, my most favorite brand ever has been. I came from Hong Kong, I am super fans of Isabel since 3 year agos. There are only 2 shops in HK carrying IM, and belonged to local selective shop named IT.
I'm glad someone liked you to write the blog for her and capture all those good and signiture items, thank you
Best, Charmaine

ReplyDelete
