Sorry for the lack of updates, but after spending 12 hours in Paris CDG airport last week due to cancelled and delayed flights (we did manage to get the only flight out to London that day), I was too exhausted and stressed for time to post too much while in the UK. Thankfully Helsinki, which was our extended stop-over destination to Hong Kong, knows how to deal with snow way better than most European countries. In fact, London and Paris might want to take a few pointers from Scandinavia when it comes to clearing airport runways and roads, considering they've had more than double the amount of snowfall but never had to cancel a single flight.
Two days probably wasn't enough time to see too much of Finland's capital, especially when most of it was covered in snow. Despite the below-freezing temperatures (the average was -10°C, approx. 14°F while I was there), it was still beautiful to wander around and considering Santa supposedly hails from the Finnish Lapland, the atmosphere was definitely very Christmassy. Like it's other Scandinavian counterparts, Finland is known for innovative and cool design, whether it's architecture, fashion or furniture. There are few luxury flagships but plenty of indie designers and sleek modern furniture or home decor stores, making it a great place to source some unique items. I'll probably visit again when it's warmer as it was quite difficult to get an idea of what the city looked like with snowflakes flying horizontally in my face...
Some of the Christmas Market snacks, including grilled sausages and fish (top), grilled mini sardines (lower left) and almonds covered in cinnamon sugar (lower right).P.S. Thanks for all the lovely comments which I will be getting back to asap. And in case I don't get to post by Friday, I wish you all a Merry Christmas!

Hello tooo you!!!
ReplyDeleteWishing you and your family a joyful MERRY CHRISTMAS time filled with smiles and happiness and looots of lovely presents!
Always have to smile about Miss word-travelling Haute World: London, Helsinki and now Hong Kong ;)
How fabulous are the "old" christmas markets; was last tuesday for the first time with some girlfriends on the christmas market to eat some special christmas market snacks and for more girls chit chat in a cozy restaurant.
When it comes to Lanvin dolls you are so right ;) They look all somehow cute. Please be advised that the retail price seems to be different when you order them: browns have them for over 370 GBP, lindastore for around 280 EUR but the Lanvin boutique in Paris sell them for 250 EUR with free express shipment even included!
MERRY CHRISTMAS and enjoy your stay in Hong Kong!
Wow! I've never been to Helsinki as it never seemed that exciting... now I realize I was wrong about that!

ooooh helsinki looks amazing. i've always wanted to visit any part of scandanavia, i've never ever had the chance :( have fun in HK - i won't be there this winter which is so weird because i've spent christmas & new years there for the past 15 yrs of my life! as for what to go see - i am as much a tourist as you are - i may have spent more time there but all my teenage years & beyond have mainly been spent here in the UK and i therefore have no idea where the really interesting and alternative places are to shop except for a few dingy alleyways (mong kok, wanchai and causeway bay) and sketchy outlets in buildings (pedder building in central) that i frequent because i don't know better. everytime i go back i feel more and more like a foreigner, especially at the rate hong kong changes. one restaurant that is a must-go everytime i go back is the vietnamese restaurant on wellington street, near 7-11. if you haven't been there, try the starter of beef in pandan leaves to start the taste explosion... heavenly! hope you have a great time there! new years celebrations there are always extreme madness... i love it! xxx

Ohh I should travel to Finland asap! I've heard a lot of good stories about this country, now here's another one.
ReplyDeleteI hope you had a great time during the holidays, have a happy new year!
Stopped to wish you the most wonderful New Year ever! I do not know how I will survive this Holiday Season with all this food and guests and wine! I am preparing to celebrate Russian Orthodox Christmas in January, but have serious doubts I will make it. Very truly yours. Miss Piggy.
ReplyDeleteSo beautiful; I'd never thought of Finland before, but now I feel like I want to visit, despite the cold weather!!

Eeek sorry to hear about your 12 hour delay! :( Finland looks so pretty- esp. that cathedral. The Christmas window displays looked really cute too. And the grilled sausages are making me quite hungry right about now and it's almost midnight here! xo, Mel
ReplyDeleteYou know what I was able to fly out of Paris just before and after the probs... I'm already back to Paris, but couldn't wait to take a look at your pics of Helsinki. I got my share of those horizontal snowflakes over there too, he hee. The city and country are very different in summer.
ReplyDeleteIt seems fitting to visit Helsinki with all that snow on the ground... I'm just catching up on my blogs now, too. So I hope you enjoyed your Christmas and will have a wonderful New Year! xx
ReplyDeleteI'd love to go there, thanks for the compte rendu ^^
