Even though I already featured a Christian Louboutin boutique on this blog ages ago - the first ever of its kind to be opened and therefore probably still the most magical, on rue Jean-Jacques Rousseau - the immense popularity of the newest Parisian store made me want to post about the designer again. The main reason this flagship is a favorite is primarily it's convenient location, but it does have some interesting decor elements and is larger than the other two boutiques in Paris.
Most people I know either hate or love the brand. It's not so much the shoes themselves that irritate the non-fans, but the fact that these days the signature red sole is used by certain posers as a way to show-off (much like a logo is misused in that respect) - a phenomenon mainly found in the fashion-obsessed capitals of the world. I once witnessed a woman in a cafe stretching her Louboutin-clad feet out in the air like there was no tomorrow, then propelling them back and forth (just in case someone had missed them) as if she were acting out some odd mating dance. In fact, many of my friends in Germany or Netherlands still think the red-soled Louboutins are a novel idea and are fascinated by the either intriciately embellished or stunningly simple heels. Which is probably the way to appreciate these shoes the most - i.e. loving the shoe for the actual shoe, not the sole alone.
Christian Louboutin at The Selby exchibition, incl. images of the Fetish heel (above) and the workshop (below).I actually still like the brand a lot. There are some shoes I wouldn't touch, others I can't stop thinking about. I'm also fascinated by Louboutin himself, a man who draws a lot of his design inspirations from travels: he has houses in Paris, Spain, Portugal and Egypt to name a few, and loves going to less popular destinations like Uzbekistan. Supposedly one of the first things that triggered his shoe obsession at the age of 12 was a sign in the Oceanic Museum forbidding women to wear sharp-heeled stilettos to prevent scratching of the floor surface. He later went on to work for Charles Jourdan, then began an apprenticeship with Roger Vivier and freelanced for Chanel and Yves Saint Laurent. For some reason he went into garden design before starting his own business and opening up his first boutique (Jean-Jacques Rousseau) in 1992. Around this time he started painting the soles of his creations red - first inspired by an assistant's nail polish. When I visited The Selby exhibition earlier this year, a quote on the Louboutin wall regarding the red sole read "it is a green light... 'follow me young man'... it is a color of passion". And if you have any doubt as to how eccentric the man is, just take a look at the official homepage...
Official website featuring the SS09 collection. Mr. Louboutin as a caterpillar and a fly, which can be swatted if you click on it... I couldn't resist. This boutique might seem quite small from the outside, but once you're inside, you'll realize that it's pretty spacious and consists of two floors. Of course before you even go in, you're bound to notice the incredible door handle, adorned with various mini CL shoes.
While most Louboutin stores will look the same at first glance, they tend to have themes. The other flagship on rue de Grenelle, is also worth looking at, as it was sculpted to look like a giant aviary alcove. This boutique space on the other hand has a fun-fair theme. The colorful patchwork couches were designed by Elizabeth Garouste who Louboutin also hired to decorate his first store. But the most interesting and cool prop is undoubtedly the Ferris wheel, filled with a selection of heels that get to go around in circles.

Any seasoned Louboutin hunter knows that the stock will vary greatly from store to store and from day to day, so I won't go into great detail about which shoes I saw - I am posting plenty of pics though. This boutique tends to stock a good range of exotic animal skins, as the area is well-frequented and tends to attract wealthier tourists. Don't be surprised if you see Russian girls buying 4-5 pairs of shoes in one go (highly depressing if you're debating whether or not you can justify buying even one), as this brand tends to be pricier outside the EU.
A blinged-up shoe in an egg on a velvet pedestal (left) and more shoes on the fantasy table (right). On my last visit two days ago, I was surprised to see they still had a large selection of SS09 shoes, but a lot of the FW09 collection was already available including the blue python peep-toes, which were quite stunning to see in person and many of the thigh-high and ankle boots.
Various large colorful eggs containing some of the more fancy shoes were placed around the boutique. No doubt Louboutin seems to like the analogy of his shoes being like exotic birds (I personally would choose a shoe over a parrot), a concept that initially inspired the various small cubbyholes in every flagship.
Yet as most people liken his shoes to works of art, you'll also find small cubicles outlined in old-fashioned frames with the various heels being the masterpieces. More fantasy items included a small side-table adorned with animals made of straw and the very majestic looking stairs that lead up to the mezzanine. Once you're on the first floor, you'll see even more shoes (many of them embellished) and a small selection of bags. This area tends to be quieter and there are more seating areas with one sofa even overlooking the back garden. Another bonus is that you get to see the Ferris wheel from above. On my way back down, I also noticed for the first time, the giant replica of a crayfish stuck to the mirrored wall.
The magnificent staircase, including a giant crayfish.
In general the SAs here are friendly but tend to be a bit stressed, especially during the weekends when the store is relatively busy. If you're in Paris and you're a die-hard CL fan, I'd probably advise you to visit all three flagships, since the brand isn't stocked in any other multi-brand boutique. Then again, I'm sure it's more fun to pretend you're at a fun-fair (filled with shoes no less) than being stuck in yet another anonymous department store.

I always hyperventilate when I enter a louboutins store in Singapore. ONE DAY I WILL OWN ONE OF THEM.
ReplyDeleteomgosh, probably one of your most drool worthy posts ever!! haha, enjoy it :)
ReplyDeleteI say YES*YES*YES to this post !!!!
ReplyDeleteShoe. Heaven. Gorgeous post. I'm not sure what I love more - the jazzy flats or those colorful egg displays! I wonder if the jazzy flats come with a cherry red sole as well! :)
ReplyDeleteLOL@ the women and her mating dance. I love it and might just have to impersonate her if/when I finally get a pair of Loubs. Don't worry I'm only kidding, I promise to keep my feet, and red soles, on the ground at all times. I'll only be showing off to the tiles/pavement I'll be walking on.
ReplyDeleteI do love CL as a fly. How darling!
Happy weekend, love! xx
p.s. so glad you got your Internet back :)
amazing! i would die x one of those shoes! one day!!!
ReplyDeleteloveeeee ur blog!

Love you for this review. :) It's so good to have an insider who can tell me everything before I go and visit a shop. I don't own Louboutins yet, but it's my dream to be in Paris and buy a pair of shoes. As much as I adore The 'Marie Antoinette' I'd probably have to go with a classic pair in black because, although I am Russian, I cannot buy several pairs of shoes in one go... :( Still, it's nice to dream... I think it will be a very special experience for me. And it will probably make me cry. :) I just adore the red soils so much. They are incredibly sexy.
ReplyDeleteI also have to say that certain celebrities did spoil the whole classy impression of having Louboutins. It's like those brainless footballers with tons of money who buy beautiful cars... They sort of devalue things.
Still, beautiful review about beautiful temptations.
Have a wonderful weekend, darling!

Hi there-what a totally fabulous post, it feels like I'm in the boutique itself!! Gorgeous pictures and a great review, well done!!
ReplyDelete'Marie Antoinette' shoe blew my roof off. Just as I thought that I am done with shopping for upcoming season - you had to post another spectacular, seductive post :-))). I love Louboutin shoes, not every single design, of course...I still think that the most beautiful shoe is not the shoe that screams out loud via glitter and insane flowers attached to it. I absolutely adore Louboutine's nude patent pupms and shoes with delicate black lace overlay. I had to smile at your description of a lady with her Louboutines up in the air :-)))The photographs are simply amazing! Well it is oficial now, I will not be leaving Paris until I visit each and every single store on my list made after your Blog!
ReplyDeleteOooooh, fab post! CL! CL! CL!
ReplyDeleteXoXo
Amen. I still adore the brand very much.
ReplyDeleteWhat a divine shop! Like something out of a shoe-lover's fairytale! Excellent post, darling!

This is going to be one of your most popular posts, that is FOR SURE...and I am jumping on the train!!!
ReplyDeleteI want to go there so bad...the store in Vegas is so fun (umm I was a weeee intoxicated) and thats where I got my Prive's...I die. I need to get going with the marketing-takeover the universe plan so I can get some boots...SELF TANNER FOR MEN?! Oh you are sooo my girl! In between shredding and wine I'll send you all my drivel.
I love the Ferris wheel, although after watching District 9 I find the giant crayfish a little creepy.
ReplyDeleteSome of their shoes are TO DIE FOR and I totally understand why that woman was waving her Christian Louboutin! LOL. the ferris wheel inside the store is a nice touch too, seems to fun!
ReplyDeleteAnd I can't believe you saw Goo Goo Dolls live... that has always been soething I really want to do ever since I became obsessed with "Dizzy up the girl" back in 97. I was going to miss my prom so I can see them in concert!! And I used to think that Jhonny Riznik is so hot hahaha but I don't think I'd have the guts to grab his pants though!
wow, i think i just had a shoegasm. haha! i didnt know they made those jazzy flats. they're all beyond gorgeous!
ReplyDeletebeautiful, simply beautiful. even though the shameless showing off of the sole i find quite horrid!
ReplyDelete(btw, i've been carrying the paris moleskine around with me for about 2 weeks now - tomorrow is finally the day of departure!)
I'm a fan! Love the ornate frames which showcased the fab creations...a store with a cozy mezzanine is a big plus...luv the sense of discovery! Fab weekend!! ~XO*
ReplyDeleteIm crazy about Louboutins! Thanks for posting all the pics. =)
ReplyDeleteThis is pure "EYE CANDY"!!!
ReplyDeleteHow fabulous are the 'Marie Antoinette' shoes!!!!
I would "present them in my closet also in a pink egg ;)
Every single pair of shoes looks
like saying; PLEASE TAKE ME HOME!!!!!
(It´s such a pitty I have today no contacts to the people I was so close in elementary school, especially my very special friend Katja!
I was so close to her and it´s sometimes kind of sad that I lose sight of her!)
HAPPY RELAXING AND JOYFUL WEEKEND TO YOU!!!
oh. my. gosh. oh my gosh! ohmygosh! I would love to be there right now..or anytime...or live there...forever.

wow! amazing. you write such fantastic reviews, I always start out intending on looking at just the pictures but get caught up and end up reading the entire thing!
ReplyDeleteThe Marie Antoinette shoe? Oh.My.God. LOVE
ReplyDeleteLol about that woman waggling her feet around to show off her shoes.
ReplyDeleteThat shop looks like heaven though. It really will be a magical place. Although I doubt I'd be able to leave empty handed (and I definitely don't have the funds for that!)
Loubieeessss. That is my personal heaven. Really. Have a Fabbbb weekend. I'm sick :(
ReplyDeleteThis my kind of history lesson - visiting your blog I always learn so much & it's the fun kind of education. To shop @ CL store's is like being Alice in Wonderland. The entire experience would be enchanting & magical. The Ferris wheel alone is out of this world. A pair of animal skin shoes are on my wish list. I am one who love's the idea of the red sole. Set's his shoes a part from all the others.
ReplyDeleteThank you for all your encouraging words regarding my new career endeavor. You are most kind & it is incredibly appreciated.
Happy weekend to you ~
Oh i think chrstian is such a legend!
ReplyDeleteI would adore a pair of his shoes!
I just think they look like the most beautiful designed shoes, some even look like art to me, but i totally get what you mean some people just want them to show off the red soles more than the shoes themselves!
OMG! He's amazing. We want every single shoe!
ReplyDeleteThanks for stopping by,
Love,
A&A.
I am loving this post so much - I am a big fan of Louboutin and am just stunned by his shoes, even if I wouldnt wear all of them. However, I do understand people getting annoyed by the brand, since others tend to flash it everywhere. It gets on my nerves too!
ReplyDeleteAgain, great post! Thanks for sharing :]
xo
Colorful, fun, stylish... What more can we ask? I want to go, now!
ReplyDeleteC.Elizabeth
Hey gorgeous,
ReplyDeletesorry for being slow in commenting in last week - there is still something in work for you and will be forwarded tomorrow! I hope all is well, darling! I'm so much looking for the holidays at the moment.... Uuuuuuh!
Hehe, I love Christian Louboutin shoes very much. There is so much pleasure that fills me up when I'm watching his designs. However, a fellow blogger (Mitsue, she is fabulous - her blog is http://mitsfits.blogspot.com/) and me were very sure that his designs are fetish shoes sometimes. Good for sitting and posing, not for having a walk of two minutes. I envy all who fit into his shoes and who could wear them properly and with grace. I haven't seen many women including celebreties who can do...
Mitsue argued that he might be wearing the shoes himself, wearing only red lipstick with them.... OMG - it was hilarious! I laughed so hard!!!!
The store is amazing! Like I went into shoe heaven..... <3 Could I move in?
Wishing you and your Mr. a wonderful and sunny weekend in Paris!!
much love sofie
i'm glad you posted this...
ReplyDeleteFetish heel.. brilliant
oh wow!!! everything about the store is wonderful. it would be like being in a theme park. just walking around in awe of everything around you. i love how loubies are so different to other shoes. they always go to the next level. either they're shinier, more colourful, higher or more blingy. i love seeing what the store actually looks like. the egg with the blinged up louboutins is gorgeous!!!
ReplyDeleteit's sunday here and i'm just being lazy today. looking at blogs and eating :D awesome huh?
and yesterday as you know i went shopping. wore the new skirt last night. it's wonderful. hope you're having a fantastic weekend lovely. MWA
thank you so much for your comment!
ReplyDeletethis entry was so fun to read. first of all i love christian louboutin, i love the brand for the red soles AND the great craftmanship and originality in every shoe. i never really go into high end stores so it was great to get a peek into a louboutin boutique! :) i love that ferris wheel and the cubby holes. the staircase is so pretty too, and i love all of the ornate sofas/chairs in the store.
Some day they will be mine. And I'll probably be too scared to wear them out of the house. Ah ha
ReplyDeleteWow! This post has made me feel like Alice in Wonderland,it's the perfect tale of Exquisite soles! Thanks to you I have fallen into Christian Louboutin's Gorgeous boutique and I can't think of anywhere else I would rather be right now! Thank YOU!
ReplyDeletep.s. I hope your weekend is Wonderful!
wow this is shoe heaven. I really like the way some of those shoes are displayed within the egg - so dainty, whimsical and pretty. I must say I cannot afford any louboutins anytime soon, and most pairs look devilishly high and uncomfortable but maybe one day...
ReplyDeleteI do hate how so many knock off brands are using the signature red sole - it somehow does cheapen the whole brand. I really love his idea behind the red sole, and it's too bad the knockoffs take the class out of it.
I'd love to own a pair of CLs someday....... someday someday.....
ReplyDeleteclothedmuch.blogspot.com
that is my idea of heaven
ReplyDeleteOooo Gosh!! Thank you for sharing these delightful pictures!! Slice of heaven. I ADORE christian Louboutin and may be getting a pair for my birthday !!
ReplyDeletexxx
My sister would love this post. She's obsessed with shoes. Great post as usual. Hope you're enjoying your weekend. Take care. Cheers!
ReplyDeleteI myself love Louboutins, and I can't imagine how anyone couldn't! I'm impressed that you were actually able to get pictures; if it were me, I'd be a crying heap of joy on the floor, unable to hold a camera, let alone take pictures. Great post, as usual!

wow, fab review. those eggs are kinda... can i say it? that giant crayfish... oh my... i'm lost for words. i guess i cannot appreciate art :) there's no doubt his shoes (some) are beautiful. i'll be content to just watch. i'm thankful i'm not like that woman :)
ReplyDeleteSo this is how heaven looks like...nice place, I have to say :) I love this brand - I guess you've realized that already - and to have so many views of one of their stores is just amazing. The inside of the shop is fascinating, the decoration is stunning!
ReplyDeleteoh dear...it's not just eye candies but it seems like i'm attending an art show....love every photo.
ReplyDeletewonderfull shop and wonderful shoes!! thx for ur sweet comment on Kira!
ReplyDeleteI would feel like I had died and gone to heaven if I visited a CL boutique. I don't even own a pair of his shoes yet but I love the designs - literally it's like fantasy candy for the feet. How divine!
ReplyDeleteWow! Isn't this post every shoe lovers dream? That store looks divine. The fact that is filled with wonderful CL shoes only makes it more enticing! Great post and a wonderful review!
ReplyDeletei just love his shoes...as does every woman! i can't get enough of them, and can't believe the prices i pay - yikes!
ReplyDeletei don't like it when people show-off in them...but luckily i don't see too much of that!
xox
This is amazing!
ReplyDeleteWonderful post :)
Thanks for your comment!
welcome back any time!
Kisses
I love Louboutin as a brand, but not all the shoes. I love their simple pumps tho. so gorgeous. I can't believe that crazy lady pimpin out her shoes. how cheezy.
ReplyDeleteMy goodness...those Marie Antoinette are beautiful! Nice blog.
