Rokit is pretty much an institution in the vintage world that is Brick Lane and most people I know either hate or love this place. Me? I do both, depending on the stock I find during my particular visit or the pricing of whatever item I'm interested in. Back in 1986 Rokit started out as a market stall in Camden before opening up actual brick and mortar stores. Like a lot of outlets in the area, it became immensely popular when the vintage craze hit the fashion scene. Even if you've not heard of it, chances are you've seen some of their stuff featured in editorials, as this place is still favored by many London stylists out there.
Rokit items featured in editorials - from top left: hat (Cosmo), dress (125), tulle underskirt (Harper's Bazaar), dress (i-D). Lower left: Military jacket (Vogue), veil (Elle), waistcoat (Vogue), dress (Look). So what can happen when a store starts being overly hyped? Prices rise and the selection starts getting a bit average. I don't frequent Rokit enough to say if this is true, but my visits have been very hit or miss. Safe to say, the stuff here isn't the cheapest I've seen... by far. The selection isn't too bad, but not the biggest. For a larger selection and bargain prices, you might want to visit the previously featured Beyond Retro first. But the reason I do come here and think it's worth mentioning in a post, is that I really like the store itself.
For those like me, who easily get overwhelmed by the wide array of clothes, accessories and shoes packed tight on racks or shelves of vintage stores, Rokit is much easier to handle. It's probably the perfect place for a vintage novice and also a good option if you're in the area but don't have the time to browse extensively. There's the faint musky smell that accompanies most second-hand places, but if you held your breath slightly while entering the store, you would probably mistake it for another regular boutique.
There are two stores, almost side by side if it weren't for The Laden Showroom wedged between them. The store I entered first contained the more casual outfits and menswear. Everything was neatly laid out and all items were very easy to browse. For the first time I didn't feel I had to dig for stuff. I started with the bags, which were placed in various modern cube-shaped cabinets and consisted of mainly no-name brands though I found some Coach pieces as well. Shoes were arranged by color on a metal rack, while accessories such as belts, scarves or hats had their own stand. The clothes consisted mainly of dresses ranging from the usual 70s polyester number to elegant chiffon evening dresses. Prices for these started at about £35 for the simpler pieces, while more elaborate sequined items would set you back around £65 or more. Basically the prices were equivalent to what you'd spend on the high-street for something brand new - although the vintage option is of course more sustainable and you're bound to get something a lot more unique.
Sweaters, knits and a good selection of jeans as well as denim cut-offs (including vintage Levis) made up the rest of the selection. I found a few great jackets, some of which had pretty decent pricing, including a thick wool blazer for £25. Scarves, sunglasses and jewelry are priced fairly low as well (starting at £1), so these are worth paying extra attention to. The menswear section is just as large and again consists mainly of casual attire, ranging from accessories, trousers and sweaters to outwear - with a good range of leather jackets.
I quickly popped into the second store, which houses the more classical vintage items and valuable pieces, evident by the fact that this shop actually had a security guard (either that or the security cameras were broken). The setting here was slightly more cramped but everything was still very well laid out. Some of the furniture here did look aged, so this environment definitely had more of a vintage feel to it than its neighbor.
I found a great selection of cowboy boots along with my favorite item: military jackets. There were plenty of dresses from the 40s to 70s, including maxi dresses and more intricate beaded evening gowns. Those channeling the 80s will love the different frilly tutus and prom dresses. Pricing varied largely, depending on the condition of the item and fabric of the garment.

As with all vintage places, you will have to dig a little and not get discouraged if you see stuff you don't want or is too expensive. Despite the hype, I think you'll still get a good deal on clothing and accessories if you look hard enough and thanks to the shop layout, browsing is pretty easy. I found most of the coats and jackets to have fair pricing, especially as they were all well-made and can't be found for less (or at all) if you tried getting them new. Here and there you'll also spot a brand name, whether it's Adidas or Escada, so there's definitely a good mix going on.
There are two other shops in the city (Covent Garden and Camden), but for those not heading to London anytime soon, Rokit has it's own online store offering worldwide deliveries so take a look if you need a vintage fix.

wow you scuba dive? that's wicked. i've only done that twice and i'm kinda terrified of it. I wish I was more brave to do stuff like that - the idea of breathing underwater kinda freaks me out.
it looks a little grubby on the outside, but somehow i don't mind (i'll take a grubby building over a grubby person any day!). and i would love to poke around there and try and find some fab finds. :)
ReplyDeletehope you have a great weekend! 1 hour and 7 minutes until my weekend begins.

I've been there! I feel so cool, want to shout it from the rooftops or something haha! You're right, it's great for a vintage novice-or a snob/lazy girl like me who hates to dig and dig for a gem. Love it, I can't wait to get back to London! Our house is right by the kings cross station, I might drag you out for some tea!
ReplyDeleteWhat the hell is up with the insecure musicians?! I really like the dude but he has got to man up! :)
I hope you have a great weekend doll!!
I had definitely heard of this store, but was unfortunately discouraged from going because of the alleged sky-high prices the one time I went to London! Drats!
ReplyDeleteNow if only the US dollar was equal to the british pound...then we'd really have ourselves a deal...
aweeesome xx
ReplyDeletefabulousss...
ReplyDeleteI was in London last year...will keep this info in my folder~ adore Vintage darling!
Hello there, I am glad you still managed to have a little bit of time in London even if it was on business.
ReplyDeleteI was really tired this week so i didn't get much time to updated the blog or check out my favorite ones :(
I have actually been to Rokit in Covent Garden and bought a few things from there. I thought the price was slightly higher than Beyond retro but i liked the atmosphere better.
Hope you are having a wonderful weekend!
Big hug
Anna

Great post! I want to book a ticket to London so I can shop there. It made the vintage store I went to today seem subpar.
ReplyDeleteHere goes another Fabulous Fashion Adventure! As I type this I have on my Pj's and I can't believe how lucky I am to have you to take me to these fantastic boutiques around the world and I don't even need a passport! Thank you sooo much!
ReplyDeleteI love visiting Rokit, especially the smaller Covent Garden one, but I seldom buy anything because of the rather inflated prices as of late! I really do love their layout though, they have a nice selection of things out, and it's all arranged so that it is easy to navigate. Haha, and I am always there on the hunt for some good cowboy boots. Hope you're having an absolutely beautiful weekend dear.
ReplyDeleteit's a great post as always.
ReplyDeleteThe store looks big.
I wish we had a great vintage store here.I'm kinda picky about what i buy. come to vintage clothing, i like to shop a great one.

Hello my sweet!
ReplyDeleteFirst one all off: I hope you're doing fine!
Next thing: I'm so sorry for the delay of my visit and comments.
And very important: Thank you so much for your overwhelming and lovely words, for your kindness and for your sympathy.
Even if it is about one year ago, some days are still too much to take and it feels like someone is absorbing all my energy. All the different pictures and memories are coming to my mind at once...
And there are other days when I'm feeling better like yesterday and today and when I'm happy to be back on the desk, visiting all my favorite blogs and sites - and when I'm able to look forward.
I hope all these things will get better with time.
Thanks so much for thinking of me and for being there. And thank you very much for everything! You're truly unique!
Lots of sweet hugs + much love always!
Sofie
I loved Rockit while in London but Beyond Retro was definately my firm favorite. It made all the vintage stores here in Auckland look tiny and seriously average.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the nice comment. I love your blog! What a fabulous idea. I only wish you were in the US (for purely selfish reasons)!

ReplyDeleteI love how you take me on all your travels :)
ReplyDeleteI know I say this all the time, but it's like I'm right there experiencing it *without the occasional purchases* I would love to visit and see what amazing treasures I could find.
xx Ela

I hope you had a fantastic weekend!
your writing style is so easy and pleasant to read. i love reading your posts!
ReplyDeleteyou're fantastic you know that?!

Sounds like you had luck finding some great stuff. Love digging through loads of stuff to find that one gem.. so this store sounds like right up my alley. Thanks for writing another fab review.
ReplyDeletexo, Becs
I think I've been there too when I were in London. London has such a great vintage shops. You got very lucky with your items! Vintage is always nice to buy because it's so unique!
ReplyDeleteLove, E
That's the thing about vintage shopping -- it's always a treasure hunt. Sometimes I come home with bags full of treasure. Sometimes I don't.
ReplyDeleteBut if the quality's there, I don't mind paying hefty sums for vintage. The pieces are all one-of-a-kind.
Didn't go vintage shopping when I was in London (years ago) but between this and Beyond Retro, I'd love to!
If i ever go to London (and i hope i do) this will definitely be a place to stop at! thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeletethank you! such nice pictures of all the clothes :)
ReplyDeleteI'm almost ashamed to admit I haven't ever heard of Rokit, even considering I've bought every Cosmo for the past two years?!
ReplyDeleteI'm going to see what is happening with their online store, I haven't ever been shopping in London despite driving past/through and around it numerous times?!
Lauren
i echo Ela's comments. this blog is the next best thing to being right there :)
