I'm finally back from Stockholm and of course I can't wait to share my impressions of the city with you. This was my first real visit to Sweden and the trip was part of a gift from the hubby for my birthday (which was last Saturday). Since this country has given us everything from ABBA to Ikea, I had quite high expectations and Stockholm didn't disappoint: the air was fresh, the people were friendly and there really is an H&M on every single street corner...
The city itself comprises of 14 islands and is beautiful, simply because you're constantly surrounded by water and greenery. I can safely say that Swedish tap water is the best I've ever tasted. My favorite past-time - aside from shopping of course, which I'll get to later - was walking among the 18th century buildings and admiring the architecture. As with all Scandinavian countries, locals were exceptionally helpful and spoke English fluently. The one thing I found slightly odd was that chewing moist tobacco seems to be a big thing there, even among teenagers. And my only gripe? The 25% VAT... ouch. Definitely one of the more expensive cities, so if you ever plan on visiting, start saving now.

It looks like such a beautiful city. I would love to go there one day.
ReplyDeleteI love shopping and looking at architecture also. It makes for a very meaningful trip. So wonderful for you to post this!
ReplyDeleteStockholm looks like such a picturesque and beautiful place to visit judging by your photos. As for the VAT, I suppose North American visitors can claim it upon departure from the EU, right?
ReplyDeletebeautiful images! Sweden must be gorgeous.
ReplyDeleteI hope you are doing great, my darling. I missed you :)
xoxo
@lisa: the VAT can only be claimed if a store participates in the refund scheme and in some cases, the full amount won't be applied (i.e. sometimes it's only half the tax). It sometimes also depends on the amount you spend (i.e. if you spend over 200 EUR in a go you're eligible to claim). What just makes a high VAT a pain is that food, services and other things like concerts or theater tickets end up with a really high price tag as well and those are things no one can claim for, regardless whether you live in or outside the EU (this of course applies to tax refunds in general). I can say that I hardly saw any shops in Stockholm that advertised the tax refund, unless it was the tacky souvenir type.
ReplyDeleteI really want to go someday! I've never been to a Scandinavian country and I would love see the culture and the landscape!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful pics, thanks for sharing it, darling!
ReplyDeleteOh Stockholm, another place I must visit x
ReplyDeleteI love Sweden. Spent two years at university there. Am in love with Sweden's unspoiled nature. Stockholm is very nice, too. The Swedes have a very high standard of living. Higher than France, England, Germany. I adore your pictures. Thank you for sharing it all with us:-)

ReplyDeleteHappy belated Birthday! (It's so weird, saturday was my bff's birthday and one of my favourite bloggers also and now yours, too... Life!) Your pictures of Stockholm are so beautiful and make me a little sad because my brother lived there for 2 years and I didn't manage to visit him once. Shame on me! But he might go back... More chances to come? You also seem to have had beautiful weather, which shows the city to its fullest advantage. What a lovely birthday present!

oh. i recently saw a special on tv about snus -- these disgusting pouches of tobacco that are being pushed like MAD by cigarette companies. i guess the user gets the nicotine fix by sucking on a pouch of tobacco, and they can SWALLOW the juice they create by all this sucking -- not spit it out. HOW REVOLTING. HOW REVOLTING. HOW REVOLTING. bleh. it gags me just thinking about it! bleh!!!
Youre such an amazing tour guide! I want to go now so bad!

WOW it looks amazing! The photos are so vibrant and vivid, just gorgeous. I have to say, the cherry blossoms took my breath away above all! St. John's was delicious, we loved it! Your advice was so valuable because since we only had a couple of days to visit, it would have been too difficult to find a good place to eat on our own. What we really wanted was traditional English food, and St. John's was the perfect place. We loved London, also...I definitely need to go back soon.
ReplyDeleteAnyway thanks for the advice and for sharing beautiful Stockholm with us!
xoxo
