Patrizia Pepe (Florence, Italy)

patrizia pepe florence
I first stumbled upon Patrizia Pepe a few years ago when I sighted a cute 70s inspired maxi dress that featured an owl-print. A few months later, when I was looking for a classic winter coat, I came across yet another piece by the label: this time it was a sophisticated black number - one of those timeless creations you could wear forever. Time and time again, I would spot either quirky, trendy, classic or modern items by this brand, which basically summarizes its appeal: a very wearable selection that could suit any taste. It's a label I've come to appreciate a lot, because whenever I've needed something for my wardrobe - regardless of the occasion - Patrizia Pepe would have a suitable version that was impeccably made and not as ubiquitous as other clothing lines. Which basically eliminates the risk of you showing up to a party wearing the same dress as your best friend.

The label, which was founded by Creative Director Patrizia Bambi (how cute is that name?) and her husband Claudio Orrea, who's responsibilities include the management side of the business, was created in 1993 in Florence and initially only catered to the women's wear market - a men's collection was added only in 2005. The contemporary style immediately appealed to consumers, but it was the combination of classic chic basics, edgy minimalist looks and more trendy flamboyant pieces that made the brand unique. While certain high street stores tend to focus on the hip & cool and other premium labels only created sleek outfits, it was the mix of both that made Patrizia Pepe a household name for both discerning fashionistas and women who just wanted something comfortable or timeless to wear.

The store design relies on the same principle of mixing looks: while the decor is simple and modern (white and ivory shelves, modest steel clothes racks), it also features more cosy unique touches such as the floral wallpaper and the olive trees that can be found throughout the boutique as a reminder of the brand's Tuscan heritage. Which means that the shop gives off a modern vibe, but doesn't come across as pretentious or intimidating. The boutique I visited on this trip was the newer outlet on Via Degli Strozzi, housed in a late-Medieval palazzo, complete with very high ceilings and a few restored frescos. And for a bit of extra color, bright plexiglass ornaments adorned the windows next to the chic mannequins.

The first thing I noticed when I stepped into the store, was the large amount of accessories, which I had previously never noticed from this brand. The corner on the left featured the more trendy modern looks, with lots of plaid and studding. Any punk rock fan would have been happy here and in addition to the numerous tartan clothes, I also spotted studded shoes (both flats and boots), studded gloves and even a studded hat. If you're over this trend, you might want to ignore this section, but I also sighted some very cool asymmetric dresses and distressed jeans and tops here.

Accessories could be found throughout the store, so if you're in the market for a bag or shoes, it's best to keep your eyes glued to the walls, where leather totes or sexy heels were displayed in little alcoves. I'm not sure if there were different categories within the store, but this boutique was large and there were almost too many collections to take in. I sighted more casual looks in the next area, including hooded vests and a large assortment of colorful wellies. Another section had a nice range of silk tops and draped dresses suitable for a night out. My favorite items were the sequined and embellished tops, which would be perfect for the holiday season.

patrizia pepe florenceThe main women's wear section which also included the spacious changing rooms (right).

The biggest areas were the two rooms towards the front, where you could find the mainline looks, most of which were chunky knits, classic jackets and beautiful coats. I saw a stunning shearling jacket in gray and I was seriously tempted by a black poncho-style coat that from afar looked like a draped shawl. The very spacious changing rooms (complete with gilded curtains) are a great excuse to try anything on and if your bored partner needs a seat, there are plenty of bright purple sofas for him to rest a little, while you go crazy in the boutique.

patrizia pepe florenceSo many clothes... and I loved all the coats and jackets, like the draped wool number on the right.

Of course the men's department might also be worth checking out. It featured my favorite wall decoration (a brown leaf-motif painted on a brick wall) and a selection of casual to sophisticated looks such as plaid shirts or elegant coats.

The store was very busy when I went, which was to be expected on a Saturday and the clientele ranged from teenagers who couldn't keep their hands off the studded coats to working mothers looking for a new business suit. Basically you could take your mom, younger sister and boyfriend to this store and you'd probably find pieces they'd all fall in love with. Prices are mid-range (i.e. between high-street and luxury) and Patrizia Pepe has plenty of flagships in other countries (mostly Europe) so take a peek if you find one near you. For everyone else, there's an online shop accessible from their main homepage... just in case you need some ideas for the upcoming holiday season.

Oh yes... you are so right "Bambi" is for sure such a cute name!!!

From one of my last travels to Florence I remember the store is just a few years old.. and it´s close to Fendi, LV and Bottega Veneta ;)
The store front is amazing with all the large windows and I can imagine that people like the store concept very much! And I can imagine the SA are nicer ;)

  6. cool! I've been looking for a studded coat or shirt too bad I don't live there. I think that if you're buying luxury items it's best to keep it classy, then it never goes out of style. Well unless you're super rich and you have money fights like mr.burns!

btw the chick with the hairy chest in my previous post is Paloma Faith apparaently she's the new Amy Whinehouse in UK?!

ugh I hate people that wear obscure stuff to get attention!

  20. Ahh sneaky! I want one of those hats.. and maybe some gloves too please! As for the christmas market, it is the one in Manchester - theirs is bigger than the Liverpool one - there are about five or six long rows of stalls and a couple of big beer tents too - I wish they could be there all year round! :) x

  21. As someone in fashion journalism I was already pretty aware of it, I always associate the label with an older clientele and quite a 90s vibe with the kinds of checks they use and all the skinny scarves. I'd like to see them pair it down a little and update the kinds of patterns they use for a more contemporary feel but it does definitely look very wearable...

  25. Hey lady! Sorry I've been MIA recently; must catch up on all of your recent travels! I like the modern vibe of this store but it's good to know that it doesn't come off as pretentious. Sometimes when I go into a boutique that's super modern and stark, I get somewhat intimidated. I'll have to check out the online site more, but saw they do ship to the U.S. Thanks for sharing, and hope you're doing well!

  49. darling - patrizia pepe is probably one of my very few brands in the semi-fast-fashion categories that i would claim as my fave - as i barely shop in topshop, mango or in that matter, h & M - when in need for something a bit trend-driven, i would go for Patrizia pepe!! and you know what is the best part :-)?? there is no PP store here in NYC - and very few stores actually carry the label - the only place i know that carry a good amount of pieces was actually a large discount store - so, i end up to accumulate a good amount of items from Patriza without emptying my bank account, haha!!

thanks for sharing such a wonderful post - i felt as if i've been there already!!! and as always, thank you for your lovely words and encouragement! xx

  56. Amaaaaazing! I just discovered Patrizia Pepe when I was in Europe this past Fall. She's awesome! Her fall collection had the most amazing pair of leather over-the-knee boots with a fringe tassel, sort of like the Gucci ones last Fall. Still kicking myself for not getting them...

  58. I have never heard of this store, but it does sound and look amazing! I have spotted some hats on your pictures and they look great! It is amazing to me how many wonderful discoveries I have made with in the past year by reading your beautiful Blog!:-)
When it comes to Stephen Jones, yes, he does get creadited for everything he does in Europe, here in the US not as much any more. By his own admition to me Mr. Jones doesn't like to trade with the USA. I have read tones of reviews from the past Fashion Week in new York and his name was mentioned only in passing when it came to Donna Karan and Jason Wu Collections.New York is not to big on hats, unofrtunately. I hope to change it someday :-). I hope your Christmas Season is beautiful and magical. I am running a very special Christmas give away on my Blog, you are more than welcome to enter :-)))

  60. How have I never heard of her???

I cannot stop staring, and I doubt I can get those images out of my head, at those super cute studded shoes and gloves. My eyes are "glued" that's for sure! Off to see the online shop and stare some more :)

  61. I've only seen Patrizia Pepe at one store here in Toronto...and the store closed down. Never saw the brand again around here. Someone should import Pepe's clothes! Please!!! Love them!

    ReplyDelete
  62. I would snatch one of those embellished hats up in a second! I've never seen anything by Patrizia Pepe in D.C. before but maybe I'm just not looking in the right places. Thanks for sharing!

  63. I adore PP. I had PP wedges ones, absolutely beautiful, in pink'ish patent tartan leather. I loved them to bits. They were super high and I almost fell over once or twice, but it didn't stop me from loving and wearing them. :)
And I have a very "relaxed" cashmere PP dress, which keeps me warm and cozy in winter.

Often I feel that their pieces could cost a lot more, but they somehow got the balance right, so you can get beautiful things without paying a fortune.

Again, wonderful post - thank you for telling me so much about one of my favourite brands!
    xxx
