Impressions of Berlin (Germany)

Berlin is one of those cities that only gradually grew on me. I remember disliking most of it the first few times I visited. I thought it was too big, rather boring and there was way too much construction going on: Because the Berlin Wall had come down a few years before, they were building like crazy and there wasn't really much to see. Large construction sites and cranes would make it difficult to enjoy tourist attractions such as the Brandenburg Gate or shopping along Friedrichsstrasse. It was only in the last few years I began to truly appreciate what the city has to offer. It's still huge, there's still loads of construction going on, but many of the older buildings have been renovated with new ones popping up, giving the city an eclectic mix of modern and traditional architecture.

Berlin is now pretty much the coolest place to be when it comes to Germany. While few would consider Germany (as a whole) to be a primary destination to visit in Europe, the nation's capital usually does top that list and you have streams of tourists going out of their way to stop by the city. It's the media and film capital of the country and is home of the Bread & Butter fashion event. It's also one of the few (if not only places) in the country where most people are capable of speaking English to foreigners and it's become a large melting pot of different cultures and nationalities.

Of course the one thing that makes Berlin special is it's history. Once divided by the Berlin Wall, it is now a unified city, with the nation celebrating 20 years of unification this November. I would definitely recommend anyone to take the time to visit some of the typical tourist attractions, such as Checkpoint Charlie or the remainder of the wall. And despite the large scale of the city, I would also suggest walking around instead of taking the subway, especially around Berlin Mitte, as you'll get a chance to check out some of the architecture. I tend to forget to take pictures when I'm in Germany, so some of the following photos were taken throughout the last three years...

  2. Hi there-wow, what a stunning city, I didn't think it would be as diverse and interesting, your photos do it real justice, lovely post as usual!!

  3. Hello, darling! Such an interesting post. You know it will probably take me ages to think of visiting Berlin (same reasons as you talk about here). I've always been under impression that it's too "steel and stone" like, you know. Plus, I grew up in Russia, so am very "soviet" when it comes to Berlin :), starting from the moment two Russian soldiers put Russian flag on the top of Reichstag in 1945 and to the moment when the wall came down.
Still, one day I'll get there...

  5. I think many European would consider Germany boring, but I agree with you- it's rather interesting and a good mix of old and new. I have some memories from my childhood, it was a big moment when the wall came down...
    have a lovely week, xoxo

  6. Hallo und einen schönen Guten Abend ;)

What a lovely surprise to see you are in Germany! 2 of my friends from university moved a few years ago to Berlin as they loved the vibe of the city. When it comes to shopping I love to shop at Quartier 206 or as you already said Hackesche Höfe, I remember there was a fab beer garden in the middle of a park in Berlin Kreuzberg; and although I actually don´t like beer we had lots of fun. And for dinner or lunch "Borchardt" is also a place to be;)

    Enjoy Berlin!!!

P.S.: ... and how can I forget Knut, the white bear...

  8. Hey, it's me. Again. :) Because a) I forgot to say that I adore it how a lot of German people speak English. It's almost perfect, I think. They were also very good at learning Russian - I corresponded with a girl from Germany when I was about 9. :)
    b) I wanted to reply to your comment on my blog. :) I am also very careful with printed t-shirts. I think I only had two or three in my life. All came from Germany, actually, as my aunt used to live there (perhaps you know about special "military villages" where Russian soldiers lived in 80-90s. My aunt and uncle were doctors there making sure everyone is healthy and happy. :)
Funnily enough, one of the tees was a printed map of Germany and the date ( 9 November 1989) when the wall fell. And just before you think I am too clever to remember the dates, no, I just googled it a second ago. :)))
    c) The thing I love about Germany is the Teddy Bears... I have quite a few. Steiner is my most favourite ones. I even remember their names. :) My collection doesn't include yummy Haribo bears, but I do like them very much.

  14. Such a stunning city. When I was in secondary school I used to visit Germany twice a year, and I feel in love with Berlin. Definitely my favourite, although Munich comes in pretty close. I remember visiting the Parliament building for the first time, the dome was so breathtakingly spectacular! I so need to go back one day. Hope you're having a gorgeous day dear :)

  15. I know I tell you every day how envious I am of all your travels, but you really are a lucky ducky.

Large construction sites and cranes, eh? Sounds a lot like Vancouver in preparation for the Olympics.

  42. wow you're right I'd def walk around there instead of take the train! The archetectures look amazing! I totally agree with you about Bono, as much as he sometimes is a pain in the ass in the lecturing kind of way I'm totally happy that he's honestly passionate about these issues rather than celebrities that goes to 3rd world and take photos just to look good with the press. I wish more celebrities are like him because they're the ones that can make the difference!

  48. you know, i was just wondering if i should try berlin when i gave up the idea of doing milan. what prompted me was that i could seek the help of many sweet german bloggers for help. i only know of 3 or 4 but i think it's a start.

thanks for helping me with my earlier query - i think i forgot to thank you?! please forgive me for my rudeness. i will still do milan but not the end of this year. there were other factors that led to this decision.

once again, thanks for documenting your journeys here so that many can benefit from it.

  69. I did not know that bear is the official symbol of berlin... haha, now i learned something new before going to bed :-))) speaking of construction, it reminded me the current situation in china - everywhere you turn, there are new building in process - every time i return back to china, i got confused as things simply change so much from the previous time .... as for the topic on individualism, thank you so much for sharing your opinion - i could not agree more on that!!! .... i hope i can elaborate more but my eyes are getting sleepy ... so till next time, xoxo

  74. berlin looks wonderful, i imagine it's such an amazing place to visit! there's so much history in germany and the contributions of germanic culture to our world today are countless. fab post!

ps. i DID find shopping in belgrade, i can't remember the street name (good thing because i sure wouldn't be able to spell it either) but if you ever get the chance to visit, just inquire about the shopping district and you'll be directed there. there were also ple ty of large shopping centers but i prefer to avoid shopping malls so i didn't really get the chance to visit. novisad is also a pretty city, smaller than belgrade and the downtown center there had cute shops as well.
    xo!

Never has anyone impressed me for so long with so much of information, fun sides and stories that really makes Berlin, and it's history live. This tour was one of my best tour I have ever think of.
