Impressions of Edinburgh (UK)

Whenever I'm in Scotland, I tend to spend most of my time in and around Glasgow. This past weekend, my Significant Other signed up for another race (an ultra-marathon which encompassed 43 miles/almost 70km in the Scottish wilderness) and me being the kind caring person I am did what any female would do... I decided to head to Edinburgh and do some shopping instead.

Now those who've been to Scotland tend to favor Edinburgh over Glasgow. The latter is the bigger city, better for shopping, entertainment and night life, yet Edinburgh is far prettier. It's the capital of Scotland and thus home of the Scottish Parliament. And because of the stunning old buildings and landmarks, it's definitely the place to be if you want to do a little sightseeing. Or if you're a Harry Potter fan, considering J.K. Rowling wrote her first book in various Edinburgh cafes (she still has a home here). A first glance at the different medieval houses might remind you of Hogwarts, which was supposedly inspired by some of the school buildings in the city.

Edinburgh is generally divided into the Old Town and New Town. Both have plenty of things to see, though the Old Town is definitely quirkier with little alleys, small shops (many of them vintage) and cosy pubs. Because August is the month of the Edinburgh Festival, which includes the Edinburgh Fringe - the world's largest performing arts festival - with many productions taking place right on the street, the city was busier than usual. I have of course sought out some cool shops, but if you're ever in town, you should definitely spend some time taking in the architecture ranging from the Edinburgh Castle (dating back to the 12th century and situated on top of an extinct volcano), the Scott Monument or the impressive structures on Calton Hill.

If anyone plans on traveling to Scotland I would recommend visiting both Glasgow and Edinburgh though, as they're only a 50 minute train ride apart.

  7. Thanks for brightening my day; Edinburgh is one of my favorite places on earth. What no climb to the top of Arthur's Seat? My Scottish spouse while dating had me climb to the top & it about killed me. The Royal Mile & Victoria St. such fun. My favorite - macaroni & cheese pies wrapped in brown paper! Okay, I'll stop now!
So glad you shared your photos :D deb

so... you know what "plage" means in German..... Good to know ;) Apropos, these 10 stylish things list is keeping me quite busy here. This is the very last time I'm accepting an award! YES! :)
Thanks so much for thinking of me and for letting me know about the IM boots... Hmmmm, thanks for telling me about their weight. That's a very intersting point. I love suede boots, actually suede boots, suede bags, suede jackets, suede this, suede that. So I don't have any trouble about the material, but I'm afraid of heavy boots.... :-S
Babe, I've created a new section on my blog, just for you. It's called "No 1 CityGuide 4 Shopping" :)

My brother went to Edinburgh often and he loved that place very much. He has found it very amusing that I wasn't able to pronounce Edinburgh in the right way when I was 11 or so "Say it again" and then rolled down on the floor. Common, get a life, brother! ;)

Wishing you a wonderful and sunny day, dear!
Sending you lots of hugs and kisses!!

  45. Oh myyyy!!! Thanks so much for doing a post on Edinburgh/Glasgow! Cath and I spent two semesters in Edinburgh and loved every single minute of it! I would go back in a heart beat. We both are big music fans, so we tried to make it to Glasgow a few times (Franz Ferdinand in person- le swoon), but we only made it out once! When I was there I lived in JK Rowlings neighborhood- but never once spotted her- next time though ;)
    Ahhh... to be in Scotland!!!

  50. Hello!! I knew you'd be the best person to ask for places to shop in London/Paris!! :) In Paris, for the first few days I am there on company money, I will be at the Intercontinental Hotel, which I believe is near the Tuileries Garden! Can you recommend any vintage shops or department stores/shopping areas around there? :)

I extended my trip by a few days so I must find a more affordable hotel on my own for that time... if you have any recommendations for places to stay in a good location, that are still relatively affordable, I would appreciate that so very much too! Basically, any words of advice would be welcome from you!! Thank you so much!!!!

  55. Oh it's lovely! I've always been intrigued by Edinburgh ever since my early 20s when I worked in advertising and was putting together a pro-bono ad campaign for the Duke of Edinburgh Awards, a program we have in Canada. I was young and unlearned...I pronounced it incorrectly when I made my first call trying to get some free ad space :)
