Hola dear readers! I'm finally in a city that actually has summer temperatures - although Paris was sunny and warmer the day I left (go figure). Nevertheless, I've wanted to travel to Barcelona for a while. I first visited ages ago, when I was still a young teenager, and while I do remember most of it, especially the Gaudi architecture and terrific food, I wanted to see it again and perhaps more. My better half has never been here, so we figured it was time to head to Spain.
Barcelona, the capital of Catalonia, is the second largest city after Madrid and very much a tourist destination. This can have several reasons ranging from visiting the Miro museum to getting wasted on the beach. But the main attraction is most likely anything and everything designed by the architect Antoni Gaudi. Part of the Catalan Modernisme or Art Nouveau movement, Gaudi's works can be described as intricate, irregular, unique and somewhat surreal. If you're bored by architecture, chances are you'll actually love his buildings.

Another thing worth noting is that Barcelona does love fashion. Don't forget that this is the city where high street giants such as Zara's biggest rival Mango (or MNG) was born. And all Spanish brands are approximately 20% cheaper in their home country than they are in the rest of Europe (and about 30% cheaper than in the U.S. or Asia). I've been told there are a few emerging designers who have some edgier collections, but in general, clothing, especially streetwear is very very colorful from what I've seen. And one thing I did notice is that the harem pants are everywhere. Not the black toned down version - but bright colorful (almost traditional) ones made of cotton or linen. One disturbing thing I did see was what seems to be the return of the mullet (the hair style, not the fish). I have seen four examples so far - not sure if it's a local thing or if they were sported by misguided tourists. I'll try to find out in the next few days...

ReplyDeleteI don't think I have ever seen something so breathtaking. I have wanted to visit Barcelona since I was 11-years-old, thanks to the communications I shared with pen pals who lived there. To this day, I dream of touring there. For now, I will have to see it through your eyes. And, from what I see in these photographs, it is even more beautiful than I could have imagined. Enjoy every moment! :)

Aiyee. I'm so jealous of your proximity to all these great weekend getaways! I was stuck with Boston. :) Haven't been to Barcelona, but I hear so many great things about it. I loved Madrid when I went there years ago. Must check out Barcelona now. Did you see that Woody Allen movie with Penelope Cruz? :D
ReplyDeleteAh, i'm late to comment! i am a hardcore fan of Spain country. Love their culture, food, place & so much more! They're somewhat i describe as having a 'vibrant & colorful' lifestyle yet romantic. Its like Paris / Venice with a touch of 'zest'. What a wonderful place to be & amazing architecture! i am so overjoyed that you've actually posted a post on Spain & its so supprising! i would one day, collect enough money to follow you around places like this.. i really look forward to this opportunity! Thanks thanks thanks & i am really enjoying this a lot more than anything else!
ReplyDeleteNot forgetting, their language. i love spanish! i'm having in mind Belle Perez - Enamorada song.. :D
ReplyDeleteoh my goodness, i want to be there!
ReplyDeleteGaudi! I am so jealous you got to see all this in person!
ReplyDeleteI feel proud that you like Barcelona!!!!! What's "the mullet style"??? I'll check what's that!! and well, hope you bought a lot!!! just let you know, that Zara didn't born in Barcelona. Inditex (Zara, Bershka, Massimo...) is a Galician brand. Mango is Catalan!! and we feel proud of it! lol
ReplyDeletecome soon again!!! I'll tell you more places to visit!!
A**
I was there only once but it is one of my favorite places in the world. I usually fall in love with any city that is a port city and Barcelona, with it's rich culture, beautiful and kind people, delicious food, gorgeous and evocative and odd architecture, was NO exception. Thanks for taking me there again with your beautiful photos.
ReplyDeleteI miss barcelona!
ReplyDeleteI remember those huge hams and dead animals hanging outside the butcher shops... i'm a vegetarian so you can imagine my "delight" about it haha.. but you never see that in mexico, so it was different; part of all the "living in Spain" tradition.
Nice pics of Barcelona! Have never been but on the list.
