While the French are masters in effortless chic, one of the nations to have defined effortless vintage the best are probably the British. It's not all that surprising considering the U.K. has some of the best vintage shops out there and that many eager shoppers have taken full advantage of them. Starting at a young age, most British will have embraced vintage as a great means to source unique pieces that have a history yet somehow also reflect their own personality. They are a cheaper alternative to overpriced designer goods and mass-produced high street items. In terms of individuality and quality, nothing can compete with that army jacket from the 60's or the 20's flapper dress. And if these pieces could talk, they'd probably have some great stories to tell.

It is for this reason I keep going to thrift stores, even though I actually lack the patience to sort through piles of clothing. A perfect area to seek out vintage if you're ever in London is virtually any store around Brick Lane. One of the best selections can be found in Beyond Retro, an overwhelmingly huge store located in a converted warehouse that stocks well over 10 000 items. It's been humorously tagged as 'selling dead people’s clothes to meet the sartorial challenges of east London’s beautiful people'. Though I'm sure some items have been donated by people that are alive and doing well - at least that's what I'm telling myself.
Even if you're not the most patient shopper, it's well worth a visit, because they have clothes, bags, shoes and other accessories to suit every taste. Loyal fans include everyone from students and musicians, to costume stylists and celebrities... the latter of course making this place more popular than it used to be. Despite extensive media coverage, the store has thankfully retained it's warehouse look and also its reasonable pricing.

While I was there, the staff were preparing a prom-corner in the store, with a selection of dresses from the 50's - 80's. A small display towards the entrance featured some vintage hats from a recent millinery exhibition that was hosted by Stephen Jones. This is probably the only non-jumbled section, because everything else will require a bit of digging. Evening gowns and party dresses (starting at £50), old leather biker jackets (starting £40), scarves as low as £1, printed day dresses for £18, bright heels (around £20) and anything else you might need or never knew you needed. You can even get wedding dresses here (starting at £60), but from what I heard, this is the ultimate destination for people seeking an outfit for parties or a costume for special events, because items like these just can't be found anywhere else.
The range of clothing is quite remarkable, probably due to the fact that items aren't just sourced from the U.K., but all around the globe, whether it's vintage kimono gowns from Japan or 70's jumpsuits from New York. Garments and accessories span the decades from the 1900's to the 90's, which might give an idea of just how many pieces the store holds. Amazingly enough, the vintage experts at Beyond Retro go through 350 000 items a day to handpick what ends up being sold on the sales floor (I could spy some of them working away in the mezzanine area). It's also always interesting to see older looks which have suddenly become popular again. If you don't want to splurge too much on harem trousers or a tie-dye top, you're bound to find a cheaper version here. Of course not all styles will look too modern, but the retro vibe will just be part of the charm.
People spend an average of 2-3 hours in the store and I can see why. I didn't have that much time, but could have easily spent an hour just in the shoe and bag section. And if I ever need a hat, this is the first place I'd come to, because I've rarely seen so many well-made unique pieces in one store. Besides party dresses and evening gowns, there were many many casual day dresses, mostly in colorful prints, that would be perfect for the summer. Quite a few girls had at least 15 of them draped over their arms, while somehow managing to browse for more.
If that isn't enough to get you going, Beyond Retro likes to host special events and invite bands to play live in-store during the weekends. A second store has opened up near Oxford Street if you prefer a more central location, but the selection isn't as big. Those in Sweden are also lucky, as Beyond Retro has several outposts, mainly in Stockholm. The vintage retailer has also promised to make a web store available soon, so hopefully everyone will be able to get some of their amazing vintage pieces online in the near future.

Wow. That looks amazing. I'm just now starting to feel "vintage" again. I agree with you-- it takes a lot more patience to hunt around for that perfect find, since quality and selection tend to vary wildly. I miss my vintage-sporting college self. There is something refreshing, also, about having to tell an inquiring mind that what you're wearing is vintage. Wonderful review!
ReplyDeleteI adore second hand stores and retro things... YUMMY!
ReplyDeleteXoXo
Hi beautiful,
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for your support. I'm happy to be home. And Paris is too beautiful for tourists to leave behind. I did not have enough time to visit Alaia outlet:-(. We had long lunch and that took alot our time( my husband is not shopper dude, he's more food/wine guy). Anyway, i'm glad to be home and visit blogs. The vintage store is awesome. I wish they had one like that in Dallas.
thanks for sharing.love...from Hanh,

Hey honeybunny :-D
ReplyDeletehow is it going in Paris so far? I'm really getting more and more excited on your next and your next and your next posting! What a great, great fun!
Once again thanks so much!! This shop is VINTAGE HEAVEN! It's funny though I've purchased a lot vintage a couple of years ago - and now starting over again! So this shop (and hopefully online shop soon) is definitely on my watchlist! I'm very patiently. You can put me inside of a shop like this and leave me there overnight... It wouldn't get boring for even one single minute!
Wishing you a good start into this new week!
much love as always, s.
Love beyond retro, I always try to visit when i'm in london!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the link exchange, I'll put yours up today too!
oh I love this store I'm sure that it's full of gorgeous vintage pieces that I'll adore :))
ReplyDeleteHey, i am so conforming to your statements "this is the ultimate destination for people seeking an outfit for parties or a costume for special events, because items like these just can't be found anywhere else." & "lack the patience to sort through piles of clothing" :D It is very true that i visits thrift stores for vintage items that you can never get another duplicate elsewhere! Imagine if someone's wearing the exact dress as us at a party! That's so embarassing :D Even if i did buy a brand new clothes from a store, i usually store it for next month or year event to wear them because i'm afraid of duplicates... ha ha! You know, people usually wear what they bought immediately after.. Sometimes, a bit of vintage makes a good look too. i feel its a worth buying material because its unique and cheap. And as for me, i admit that i'm a bit impatient when it comes to digging & searching.. For people whom have good eyes, they won't have such problems as they can easily spot pieces that's beautiful and worth buying. Thanks for this recomendation, i'm alreadt planning to ask my boyfriend's sister who is in the UK to get me some stuff in this shop.. :)
ReplyDeleteWishing you a fabulous monday!

I desperately, desperately, desperately need to visit this store. There is nothing more perfect than vintage!
ReplyDeleteI love Beyond Retro, I don't always buy anything from there but I just love browsing! When I first visited I thought it was huge but i'm used to it now! I love their bag wall and they always have great belts. Brick Lane is one of my favourite places to shop in London.
ReplyDeleteI haven't bought anything from Beyond Retro yet as i usually pick my vintage stuff from Notting Hill. I will probably visit the one near Carnby Street.
ReplyDeleteI have been feeling a little under the weather and the pampering did help.
xx
Wow how fun to go to prom in a vintage gown! Mine was not that original at all!
ReplyDeleteI am becoming obsessed with your London series! I think I need to check my british airways miles and get back over there!
And yes-found both margaritas and d-bags on Polyvore...typed them in as joke, and then...voila! haha!
xoxo!!
OMG! I would probably never leave, this is solely a dream come true. This is truly an amazing find, without a doubt I would be the first one there and the last to leave. Thank you for sharing your excursion to Beyond Retro
ReplyDeletea timeless shop I never knew existed!
you make me wish i was living in LONDON!
ReplyDeletei am rather impatient are picky, so thrift store shopping is a bit of a trial for me. however, if they could grab all the thrift jewelry and bags in london and send it to me, i'd be happy to start picking out the gems!
and the commment you left on my blog today?!?!? IT MADE ME LAUGH OUT LOUD. you should get some kind of award or something for the best comment of the day.
if you need any treats from los angeles, let me know and i will try and help you out. :)
oh my. i'm shuddering at the thought of being there. how many DAYS do i need to finish looking thru these treasures?
ReplyDeletelove your easy style of writing. thank you for starting this blog for us :)
Amazing store! I wish I could go there... I love vintage finds just because nowadays, it's easy to buy something online or in a store, but hunting down a vintage treasure is a lot more rewarding!! I can tell there are some beautiful, amazing pieces just from the pics!
ReplyDeleteI wish I had known about this store when I was in London! Unfortunately, when I was there the exchange rate was about as bad as it could have been (the US dollar was insanely weak) and I found most of the vintage to be extremely pricey. I want to go back soon though, hopefully after the dollar gets strong again! (If it ever gets strong...but that's another point entirely).
ReplyDeleteI would LOVE to check out that place!! It reminds me of a little place I used to go to in Lexington :)
ReplyDeletewow, that store must be super cool...
ReplyDeleteHoly macaroni. Cannot even tell you how much fun I would have raiding this.
ReplyDeleteWould feel right at home amidst all those handbags. Holy I wish this existed in Vancouver.
such fun outfits! i wish i could shop there!
ReplyDeletethe store is really big!

This store looks great! Love that they were organizing a prom section! I'm easing into vintage- pretty anal about the condition of my clothes- I need all of the threads to be perfectly tight- if anything is amiss, I won't buy it! I do need to have more patience in a vintage store- I think I'm fine in flea markets for some reason- maybe because I know I can just go to the next stand versus a store that's in a confined space! Hope you have a fabulous week!! And the meeting went great- my best parental meeting ever (not that I've had tons and tons :)) I was nervous before they arrived but once they sat down at the restaurant, I felt right at ease! And my boyfriend told me the very complimentary things his parents said about me afterward so it went great! :) xoxo, Mel
ReplyDeletei LOVE beyond retro - such a well thought out post. unfortunately i always spend far too long in there and come out completely exhausted, many calories burned for sure haha. i had no idea there was one on oxford street too, thanks for the heads up :)
